Someone who wants to build a community that upholds Humanist values!
A Humanist Organizer might be interested in organizing...
Fun social events, i.e. book clubs, karaoke nights, and more! (see Program Toolkits)
Coordinate service projects and collaborative events with other organizations
Advocacy projects relating to church/state separation and other Humanist issues
Nope! If you’ve ever hosted or led anything (or are interested in doing so) you're good to go! Organizing is less about expertise and more about consistently showing up and following through. You'll also have access to guides, templates, and coaching, so don't worry!
Stay consistent and keep showing up.
Make sure the event is welcoming and accessible to everyone.
Ask for input: What do people want more of? Less of?
Start small. Even 3-5 people can make for a great event. Smaller crowds allow stronger connections, and input from just a few might make your goals feel clearer.
Spread the word about your wins! See our social media/marketing guides.
We can! AHA has an organizing team that is totally willing to answer questions and give you the support you need (grassroots@americanhumanist.org). There are a bunch of guides, ideas, and templates we can show you. We also provide provide free coaching for how to organize effectively.
We encourage building a small team of leaders at first—even just 2-3 people can provide strong support and enthusiasm. Once you've had a couple of events, regular attendees may be interested in joining this team and helping your support system grow even stronger.
Yes—as long as it’s issue-based and nonpartisan.
Under 501c(3) nonprofit rules, your group can:
Mobilize and protest on issues that are not inline with humanist values.
Educate the public on key issues (climate, abortion rights, LGBTQ+ inclusion, secular public schools, etc.)
Organize petitions or contact elected officials
Hold public forums or letter-writing sessions
Participate in ballot measure campaigns (depending on local laws)
You cannot endorse or oppose political candidates — but you can absolutely advocate for secular, humanist values in public life.
