In an effort to help our AMAESD teachers in this unprecedented situation we are sharing a list of distance learning resources that are recommended by fellow educators. Some may fit into your curriculum. They may not follow state standards directly, but the content will be sound. Please keep in mind that this page will be updated regularly.

Reading Resources (K-2)

Vooks Students can access a read aloud online. This site does cost 4.99 a month but will allow for 30 days free.

Raz Kids Leveled Readers Leveled reading practice for students. Leveled reading should be assigned by a teacher. It should not be the only form of reading a student does.

Grade 2 Khan Comprehension (10-20 minutes)

  1. Start at your grade level and do 1-2 practice sets per day (or 10 practice sets per week).

  2. This should take about 10-20 minutes per day.

  3. If you find it difficult, completely okay to start at an earlier grade level. Likewise, if you find the passages and questions to be easy, feel free to move to higher grade levels. 2nd grade

Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Lessons (K-1) The Heggerty site is a great resource for daily lessons. Lessons for Monday-Friday of the focus week are updated and posted. Sequencing may not be exactly where teachers left off but some exposure to phonemic awareness is better than none. Make sure to include the Covid E-19 video for parents as well. If parents would like to learn the hand motions they are available here as well.

Benchmark Distance Learning Support This site will offer support for teachers who want to assign and use Benchmark Literacy Resources with students. In addition, online lessons are offered for K-2 from 1-2pm EST daily. Search “Benchmark Distance Learning-Literacy Block” on Facebook to access.

Time for Kids Subscription Families and teachers can get free access to four grade levels of Time For Kids for the duration of this

Kate Messner Read Aloud K-2 Author Kate Messner offers read alouds for children in the primary grades.

Scholastic Learn At Home Day by day projects to keep kids learning at home.

Epic! Digital library for kids 12 and under. Please note: Classroom teacher needs to obtain a classroom code and send to students. This could be done through Remind.

NewsELA (2nd grade readers and above)

PBS Learning Media Standards aligned learning for students in grades K-2. Has support for phonics and phonemic awareness under the tab “Reading Foundational Skills”

Read Live Read Live is to be used if your student already has an account. This tool is not available for free if your school does not already subscribe.

MobyMax The software curriculum spans Math, ELA, Science, and Social Studies for students in grades K-8 and meets the needs of struggling students as well as those working on grade level and beyond. Teachers need to call the number listed on the homepage in order to get kids started.

Libby For digital books and audio books. Anyone with a library card (at least in whatever cities/states use Overdrive) can access it.

Listenwise (2nd grade readers and above) is an online platform that supports remote learning with easy-to-use lessons and quizzes. Listenwise offers a curated collection of more than 2000 lessons featuring brief nonfiction audio stories for students in grades 2-12. Lessons address current events and popular curriculum topics in English language arts, social studies, and science. Listenwise sources podcasts from public radio and other producers of high quality educational audio content. Teachers can set up classrooms through May 31 or parents can sign up for 90 days free.

Words Per Minute - check your speed (6-12) How many words do you read per minute? Most adults read between 200-250 WPM . . . college students average 300 words per minute. How do your students rate as they prepare to head to college? Fluency can be increased by reading and rereading the same passages several times.

Newsela (6-12) Articles at all grade levels - set your reading level and assign articles in Science, Social Studies, and many current events.

Kelly Gallagher - Article of the Week Archive (7-12) content with a variety of articles to respond to

Readworks (6-12) Free content that highlights articles and comprehension activities for

Tween Tribune (6-12) News written by kids and professional journalists. Select your grade level.

Project Gutenberg (Literature 9-11) Website for access to free literature for students to read.

Science News for Students (6-11) Science articles for secondary students. Search based on interest and current events.

John Spencer’s Writing Prompts (6-8) 100 writing prompts for middle-schoolers.

Mackin Books (6-12) - Free access to over 1,500 Mackin Classics from now until the end of the year.

Michigan Virtual (6-12) Free content to online high school courses through Michigan Virtual online.
