English Language Arts Intervention is a course for 6th grade students to master the art of reading, writing, listening, speaking, and language. In this class, students will read extensively both assigned and self-selected books, practice various types of writing, and emphasize clear communication skills through listening and speaking. This course is based upon the California Common Core State Standards for Reading/Language Arts and may include:
Grammar and Punctuation
Spelling and Vocabulary
Reading Fluency and Comprehension
Writing Genres: Informative/Explanatory, Narrative, and Argumentative
Genres of Reading
Oral Communication
Reading Strategies and Skills
Strategies include: predicting, inferring, summarizing, questioning, evaluating, monitor and clarifying
Skills include: word meanings in context, cause and effect relationships, answering text-dependent questions, comparing and contrasting, determining main ideas and key details, author’s purpose/craft, and literary devices.
Typically, this class will not be assigned homework; however, to be successful in reading, writing, and language students should be reading at least 30 to 45 minutes a day during their personal time at their independent reading level. This class is graded based upon class participation, reading comprehension, writing, and language standards.
