Transformation either happens as a result of research or research drives a transformative leader. Regardless of the sequence one cannot deny the connection between transformational leadership and research. An example of this can be seen in the psychological experiment of Pavol’s dog. In this experiment, classical conditioning is demonstrated. This 1890s experiment showed the responsiveness of a dog in response to a neutral stimulus with a positive stimulus. The salivation of a dog at feeding time is associated with the ringing of a bell. This research still has implications on education today. Pavlov’s theory of learning, known as classical conditioning, or Pavlovian conditioning, posits that behaviors can be learned through the association between different stimuli. The goal of my research is to make connections between the theory of learning, high yield teaching strategies, and participation , and achievement in middle grade classes. Many middle school students have developed a sense of apathy as they transition from elementary to middle grades. This can be attributed to a number of factors including overall development, societal norms, adolescent brain development and more. Although educators can not affect all of the aforementioned areas, the one area that they can affect is the classroom. By providing rich educational experiences through the use of engaging research based strategies known as High Yield Instructional strategies teachers can increase student participation, engagement and achievement. Ultimately addressing the problem of student apathy, boredom and disconnect with the middle grades teaching and learning. Throughout my research I would like to know more about High Yield Strategies, their origin and effectiveness across demographics specifically with middle school students. How and why do these strategies have such an impact on engagement and achievement? I’d also like to address barriers that educators may have in implementing these strategies with fidelity. Although there has been some research in this area several connections are yet to be made.
