I utilize an approach to teaching that employs a variety of methods to education. I lecture for around 20 minutes and then segue into discussion groups that are prompted by a question I pose to the class. This timeframe is backed by pedagogical studies on attention. As the semester progresses, I adjust the roles of the students in the classroom. Midway through the course, instead of giving my own 20-minute introduction, students present on the reading material. After this point in the course, students become responsible for submitting their own discussion questions to their groups. I allow students to choose which readings to present; they can guide class discussions in directions that resonate with them. My general approach to teaching was developed through my participation in numerous teaching workshops and reading groups such as "Introduction to Anti-Racist Pedagogy at a Predominantly White Institution" and "Diversifying Curricula and Course Content."
