Welcome to fifth grade mathematics. All fifth graders at Troy will be using Envision 2020 Mathematics. However, some components will vary from class to class. Regardless, the same 16 topics will be covered this year and expectations for grading will be similar between math teachers.
Mathematics success is based on math facts fluency and lots of practice.
Math fact fluency is the ability to quickly recall addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division math facts. Timed tests will not be given, but it is expected that students master their math facts. Mastering math facts is extremely important because they form the building blocks for higher-level math concepts. When a student masters math facts, concepts will be significantly easier and the student will be better equipped to solve problems faster. If the student spends a lot of time doing the basic facts, then there may be confusion or inaccuracies. Math anxiety starts when students fall behind and can’t keep up. To avoid these anxieties, students should focus on learning the foundational math skills (math facts). Please work with your child at home on multiplication facts if your child has not mastered them.
Practicing is something that must be done in addition to studying. Students can study for a test, but to truly master math skills, students must practice consistently. Think of math like a sport or learning an instrument. You have to continuously practice to master your technique. Therefore, students are expected to complete daily classwork, homework (Practice Buddy), and assigned skills on Success-Maker. Math is a universal language, and just like learning any language, it needs practice and repeated use. Practice will increase confidence and help students be better prepared for assessments.
EnVision Online Math Program - Students have access through Clever.
Google Classroom - Teacher created lesson slides (used for instruction), study guides, answer keys, and more will be posted for every topic.
Topic Workbooks - Each Topic Workbook includes guided and independent practice problems, problem-solving questions, and practice tests. Students may not need to bring the entire workbook home. If needed, individual pages can be removed to complete at home and returned the next day. When not in use at home, workbooks will be kept in students’ math binders at school. However, students are always welcome to take their math binder home if they’d like additional practice or review.
Practice Buddy - Practice Buddies are found in the online portal. It offers auto scoring with on-screen help for every lesson. However, step-by-step work must be shown on the work paper provided for full credit.
Practice Buddies are worth 2 points each lesson: 1 point if work is not shown and 2 points with work
Quick Checks - These will be used to assess student understanding of the concept taught daily.
Quick Checks are worth 5 points each lesson.
Quizzes/Tests - A quiz or test will be given at the end of each topic. See Testing Policy below.
Quizzes are worth 45+ points
Tests are worth 100+ points
Success-Maker - Success-Maker is an online personalized and adaptive supplemental math program that adjusts in real time to specific individual learning needs. The program (1) provides appropriate differentiation for students performing on grade level, (2) intervenes at just-right intensity for students who are not yet at grade level, and (3) challenges high achievers and gifted students.
Worth 10 points each week
XtraMath - Online math facts fluency practice. This will be done at school. I suggest flash cards or paper and pencil practice are encouraged at home.
Homework? My goal is for students to complete most of their math work during class. Time is always provided to work on Practice Buddies and Quick Checks. Ideally, students will have little to no homework. However, any unfinished classwork will need to be completed at home.
If your child is consistently spending more than 30 minutes on written math work at home, please reach out. You can email me or write a note in your child’s Troy Planner indicating how much time was spent on the assignment. This helps me better understand your child’s needs and make any necessary adjustments.
Assignment Completion & Credit: Practice Buddies and Quick Checks are typically due the same day they are assigned, though extensions may be provided in certain situations, such as absences. To receive full credit, students must:
Complete the assignment online
Show their work on the provided work paper
Each assignment is worth 2 points, and although this may seem small, the points add up. With 4–5 assignments per week over a 9-week quarter, students can earn between 72 and 90 points.
Why Due Dates matter: Meeting due dates helps students stay on track to reach important learning goals. We emphasize the habit of recording homework in the daily Troy Planner and completing tasks consistently—both at school and at home—to support responsibility and academic success.
Late Work Policy:
Late work is accepted for partial credit up to three days after the original due date.
1 point is awarded for late assignments submitted within this window.
Students must email me once late work is completed. A score of zero in PowerSchool may not be updated unless I am notified.
Missing Work & PowerSchool: Occasionally, assignments may be missed. Missing math work will be recorded as a zero unless it is submitted within three days. Parents and students are expected to check PowerSchool regularly to stay informed and avoid surprises at the end of the quarter.
In cases of extenuating circumstances, I am always willing to work with families to create a plan for successful completion of schoolwork. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if support is needed.
This policy was determined by the fifth grade mathematics department:
To be eligible for a test retake, students must complete the practice test—with all work shown on separate paper (provided in class)—by the assigned due date. I will strongly encourage students to be proactive in preparing before each test.
Retakes are available for students who score below 70%. Before retaking the test, students must complete test corrections and meet with me to review them. Retake scores can earn up to a maximum of 70%. It is the student’s responsibility to complete the corrections, meet with me, and schedule the retake.
Total Point System is used in 5th grade math and NOT percent weights. In any case, the value of assessments outweigh any other category due to the points assigned to assessments (higher in value) vs. the points assigned to other assignments (lower in value).
