Welcome to Team 212! My name is Mrs. Koziarz and I will be your Language Arts teacher. I have been teaching for over 20 years - mostly here at Troy. I earned my undergraduate degree in Elementary Education (I am licensed to teach all subjects in grades K-8) from Iowa State University. My first job was in North Carolina teaching 5th grade. A few years later we were moved to Vermont where I switched to first grade, and fell in love with the reading process. I earned my masters degree in Literacy from Lesley College in Massachusetts when we were moved to Ohio. I was extremely blessed to get a job teaching 6th grade at Troy and recently moved to 5th grade. Troy is truly a special place. I know you will learn a lot this year, grow as a person and have a little fun along the way. I am looking forward to it- Mrs. K
The purpose of this page is a resource for Language Arts. We use Google for most of our work and research. It is a safe and monitored domain through Avon Lake City Schools. Google has similar capabilities as Microsoft Office, but is a web-based program and it saves automatically- no flash drives!! The Google Classroom is an organizational tool to assign and turn in work. The students can also use Google Classroom as a collaboration tool- they can have monitored discussions and threads. Our LAngugae Arts curriculum is through CLKA Amplify. It is a researched based program through the Science of Reading that will make our students better readers and writers. More information can be found HERE

Daily Homework
It is an expectation that your child reads for at least 20 minutes each day. I will give them a book to read each month with a daily activity to go along with the chapters read. We have a reading calendar to track our progress that will be filled out and signed by an adult daily. Your children are more than welcome to read a book of their choice also.
Scholastic Books Reading Club is your connection to books your child will love, and every purchase gives back to your child's classroom with free books and more. You will have a chance to order books through Scholastic once a month, your child will bring home the information to you. You can access the Book Club website by clicking on the title: "Scholastic Book Clubs" my class code is GTZ9M.
Vocabulary Study
We will be using stem words to increase our vocabulary this year. The students will be given a list of stem words to memorize and will be tested each week. The purpose of this additional study is to expand their understanding of words by knowing what the word parts mean. The list can be found here, it will also be in the student's Google Classroom.
The Lexile Reading level system is a scientific way to match books that are at your child's appropriate reading level. The students get their reading levels through the MAPS testing that they will take three times a year. The website is easy to use and can match books according to your child's needs. You can access the website by clicking on the Title: "Lexile Reading Level".
