Atoms & Molecules

Atoms

• All matter is made up of atoms.
• Atoms are made up of three parts: Protons (+), Neutrons (0), and Electrons (-)
• The number of protons determines the type of atom. For example, all oxygen atoms have exactly 8 protons. If it has any less or any more protons then it is no longer an atom of oxygen.

Molecules

• 2 or more kinds of atoms held together by chemical bonds.
• Molecules can vary in size from just 2 atoms to thousands of atoms.

The square above is the typical image for a type of atom on the periodic table of elements. There are three main parts to the square.

• Atomic Number: The number of protons in an atom of that element.
• Atomic Symbol: The symbol used to represent that element. The picture above shows the atomic symbol for Helium.
• Atomic Mass: The mass of an atom of that element.
