From our principal, Mrs. Rocha -
The Wellness Room is designed to help students learn valuable skills like emotion regulation and self-regulation. The function of the Wellness Room is based on physiology and brain science (neuroscience). We are teaching students two main concepts:
1) Understand their Stress Response: learn about their brain and recognize how their stress response system works. They learn to recognize the signs when their nervous system becomes dysregulated and what emotions they are feeling when that happens.
2) Self-Regulation: learn healthy coping skills they can use when they become dysregulated, to manage their emotions, thoughts, perceptions, and behavior. We are all doing the work of self-regulation every day to engage in meaningful work and build healthy relationships.
It is important for students to know we all feel stressed, frustrated, sad and angry sometimes. We are human beings and to be effective in our relationships and endeavors we need the skills to self-regulate. We also know that knowing is not doing. Rather than tell kids how to self regulate, we now allow them to practice the skill in the moment, throughout the day when they need it. We feel safe when the people around us are self-regulated, and when we feel safe we can learn. We hope our students feel safe and ready to learn each day and also know we care about their well-being.
