Did you know that Pysanky (or Pysanka) eggs are an ancient tradition of the Ukrainian region that stretches deep into the past? When Christianity became the dominant religion, pysanka eggs became associated with religion. During the time that Ukraine was part of the U.S.S.R. pysanka eggs were deemed by the Soviet regime to be a religious observance and were banned. It was literally illegal to make them! When Ukraine obtained its freedom from the U.S.S.R. the tradition was brought back and pysanka is once again part of the culture of Ukraine.
