Number Sense

Would You Rather

www.wouldyourathermath.com

Each post has two options and the instruction: Whichever option you choose, justify your reasoning with mathematics.

This is great site to generate discussions about math. What formulas and operations will you use to figure out what is the best option for you? Would your choice be based on math alone? These questions can work in groups or with independent learners.

A teacher has created a worksheet for the problems: http://www.wouldyourathermath.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/would-you-rather-11.pdf

In a perfect world you might choose to run the beachside resort rather than the downtown hotel because you'd like to take the winters off to go travelling, but which one would be more profitable? If profitability were your greatest priority, which would you choose?

Math Eyes

This site is more about developing number sense than providing learners with sets of problems. It is about developing a positive approach to mathematics and increasing confidence in our ability to do math.

Adults believe that the real world mathematics they can do in life and work is just ‘common sense’ the real world. Mathematics they can’t do is mathematics. Having Maths Eyes changes the view of mathematics as being something everyone just does in school. With maths eyes people see the mathematics they do every day so mathematics becomes real and meaningful.

There is a resource pack that explains the approach and and activities for Developing Number Sense; using Geometry to develop a Sense of Proportion; and doing Problem Solving using a storytelling and math words approach.

These activities will work well for embedded numeracy or integrated numeracy curricula.

They host a competition for Math Eyes posters each year.

Entrants create a Maths Eyes style poster using a photograph taken in their local area and an accompanying tagline highlighting the mathematics that they have seen in the photo using their maths eyes.

Citizen Math (formerly Mathalicious) (US)

Free Lessons

  • Is there an upside to having a bad day?

  • How dangerous is texting and driving?

  • What factors influence homelessness in a city?

  • What's the best way to position a car's mirrors?

Citizen Math is immersive, engaging and effective because it uses math to look at the world.

Citizen Math lessons are whole-class conversations. Your role (as teacher) is to facilitate thoughtful discussions between students that encourage them to consider problems from multiple perspectives. This exploration leads to elevated discourse and helps students develop the skills they need to more clearly understand – and make a positive impact in – the world. All the tools you need are included.
