Our goal is to provide a safe and healthy learning environment for the students whose learning has been disrupted for an extended period of time due to the Typhoon Haiyan and COVID outbreak, in the affected area of Northern tacloban, providing one new disaster-resilient building for 81 Kindergarten students & 2 staff - with 2 new classrooms; temporary learning center repairs and new WASH facilities for the full school impacting 534 & 15 staff from kindergarten to grade 6, while increasing community capacity and engaging volunteers and local community.
We will implement the CBFT (Cement Bamboo Frame Technology) an innovative, sustainable (less carbon footprint), cost-effective, and disaster resilient system that can also add livelihood in the communities we serve.
We will implement Disaster Risk Reduction training for the school community to increase in DRR knowledge and best practices within the local community. Additionally, we will provide training on a comprehensive maintenance manual of the Bamboo new building for the local community to ensure ownership and guarantee its relevance.
We will engage local specialists to provide training and expertise to schools, on topics related to Child Protection and WaSH.
Below you can see a picture of a proposed design of the new school building that we are building with the cement bamboo frame technology.
We will be starting our days early! Breakfast will be available from 6:00 AM, and we will leave for the site at 7:00 AM The Philippines is very hot, so we will start work early - at 7:30 AM. Lunch typically starts at 12 PM and then the work will continue between 1 and 4 pm. We will also factor in some 10-15 minute water breaks throughout the day to ensure everyone stays hydrated and gets some rest because the work could be intense.
After you return home from the work site, you will have a chance to unwind, relax, and reflect on your day as a part of our nightly team meeting. After that, we’ll serve dinner. Every All Hands and Hearts base has a curfew and quiet hours in place to ensure we all get enough rest before the next working day. Please remember that they are non-negotiable and apply both to staff and volunteers. We are taking our work very seriously, so we expect that you will understand and obey the rules to help us make this program a successful one!
