The Jhunga village lies in Dudhauli Municipality of Sindhuli district, which is about 180 KM away from Kathmandu. This Municipality has 14 wards and a population of approximately 75,000. The headquarters of the municipality lie in the town of Dudhauli.
The Jhunga village only has some small shops, small cafes, etc. However, Dudhauli town, located about 25KM away, has several small stores, restaurants, hotels, health clinics, limited banks & ATMS, etc. Also, Sindhuli, which is approximately 33 KM away, is much larger and has the majority of the amenities you might need, such as large shops, hotels, and banks.
It is recommended to have all needed things purchased from home or Kathmandu before heading to the base in Jhunga village.
Nepali people are very friendly but may seem shy when meeting strangers. Politeness is key, and it’s best to avoid swearing or using strong language.
Given local customs, especially in rural areas, please wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees. Public displays of affection between opposite sexes are generally discouraged, even for married couples, as they can be viewed as inappropriate.
Winter in Southeast Nepal can be very cold in the months of November through March, particularly in the late evenings and early mornings. In April and May the temperatures begin to gradually increase, but thunderstorms are common. June is the early monsoon season and the chance of daily thunderstorms increases and heavy continuous rainfall is common. Please be sure to check the local forecast and pack accordingly.
ACTIVITIES DURING YOUR TIME OFF
During your time off, there are several places you can explore:
Local Markets: We are blessed with the nearby downs of Dakaha and Bhiman, both of which have several shops and useful amenities (including an ATM). Also, on Wednesdays and Thursdays, there are special evening markets in Dakaha and Jhunga.
Hatpate Village: We get amazing views of a mountain from our base. At its peak, there is a village that gets incredible views (particularly at sunset). It's a nice trek, or tuk-tuk ride to reach the village, well worth the effort.
Suspension Bridge: The local town of Bhiman has a new Suspension bridge to reach a community over the river.
Sindhuli: This is our nearest big town, accessible via bus, tuk-tuk, or Jeep. It has very nice hotels, plenty of shops/markets, and a beautiful setting.
Sindhuli Gadhi: A fort sitting in the mountains nearby is an important historical monument. The Himalayas are visible from here on a clear day.
The village: Walking around our local community offers a unique insight into rural Nepal living. Traditional houses and rice fields are home to wonderful people and their array of animals, including cows, buffalo, goats, chickens, ducks, dogs, and the occasional pig.
Chitwan National Park: A popular destination for those needing their 3-day break, Chitwan is a 5/6 hours Jeep ride away, but well worth the journey. Elephants, Rhinos, and Leopards are among the many animals roaming freely among this incredible landscape.
For more help, do not hesitate to ask our staff members about the program, who can guide you. Remember to check local travel advisories and guidelines, and respect the local customs and traditions during your visit.
