Can a student use their personal Chromebook or laptop instead of the district's Chromebook?
The Allen Independent School District ISD discontinued the use of the BYOD computer device policy for students starting in the school year 2023-2024. This means students will not be able to use their own computer devices on campus when the new school year starts. Key considerations that were taken into account to reach this decision include:
The Empower 1:1 student device program has been established and provides a device for instruction to each student in the district.
District devices are set up to access all the instructional and testing applications that are required for student use by grade level.
Security and filtering policies are inherently more consistent, manageable and enforceable in district-provided devices.
The increase in online testing makes it more important than ever for students to be familiar with devices provided by the district in particular because students cannot test on their own devices.
Technical support for students and their assigned devices is more effective and streamlined when students are utilizing district devices.
Consistency of devices helps to minimize classroom downtime due to connectivity or usability issues BYODs may have.
Allen ISD has implemented logistical processes as part of the Empower 1:1 program to make sure devices for instruction are available on campus by the start of school (distribution dates vary by campus and grade level), effectively providing district devices to all students from the beginning of the year.

What level of security on the Chromebook when it is at school?
While on campus, Chromebooks connect to a secure, district-managed network. VPNs are blocked and not permitted, in accordance with our Acceptable Use Policy.
Allen ISD uses multiple layers of security, including firewalls and Content Keeper, which filters web content based on the student’s account. Because Content Keeper is tied to the student login, it continues to filter content even when the Chromebook is used at home. This system blocks access to websites like Reddit and other platforms that are not considered appropriate for educational use. Filtering rules are based on student age and grade level, and SafeSearch is also enforced for added protection.
In addition, GoGuardian is used as a classroom management and monitoring tool. During school hours and while on campus, teachers can view and manage student activity on their Chromebooks in real time. These monitoring features are only active during the school day and do not extend to use outside of school hours or off-campus.
What level of security on the device is available when my student takes home their district-issued Chromebook?
The same level of security is on the device on campus as it is at home. As best practice, we always encourage families not to use guest/open networks that don’t require credentials to log in as those can be not secure.
