The first day of Track practice for the 2025 school year will be Monday, March 3rd from 3:15 till 5:00. We practice each day after school unless announced otherwise. The Parent meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 18th, 2025 in the gym at 5:00.This is the Tuesday before the first scheduled track meet. You will be able to enter by the side door leading into the gym. This meeting will be brief (usually less than 15 minutes). It may take longer if you fill out the medical release forms while at the meeting. I will go over the concussion information and ask each parent and athlete to sign off on the concussion sheet as well as an (Informed Consent Sign Off Form). This gives the necessary permission and information in the event there is an accident. On the back of the form, the student and parent will sign off that they have read the Athletic Policy of West Alexander Middle School. Please read the academic section of the Athletic Policy in reference to eligibility. Athletes must be passing 3 out of the 4 core subjects to be eligible to participate. If there is a scheduling conflict and you are unable to attend the parent meeting, please tell your athlete to let me know so I can plan to meet with you at another time.
Each athlete that comes out for track must have a current sports physical from the school year in order for them to participate. If they do not have a current physical before the first day of practice, they CANNOT try out for the team. If your athlete has participated or tried out for an earlier sport in the 2024-2025 school year, Coach Mays will have their physical form on file. The physical forms can be turned in to Coach Brown on the first day of practice. If the athlete is not sure about their physical being up to date, they can see Coach Mays and he can check and see if the physical is good for the season. Coach Mays has all the physical forms for each athlete on file, so he can quickly look them up for the students. Please make a doctor's appointment weeks BEFORE March 3rd if your athlete needs a new physical. If the physical is not up to date by March 3rd, they cannot come out for track. These are NC state regulations.
Again the first day of Track practice is Monday, March 3rd, from 3:15 until 5:00. Please let Coach Brown know if there are any reasons you cannot be there for the first day. Anyone that does not come out for the first day, unless they are absent from school, will not be able to participate. Anyone trying out for baseball or girl's soccer will be able to join the team for tryouts after the baseball and soccer make their cuts. The first day is very important, in that, all rules and expectations are covered and forms are passed out and signed. A parents' meeting is set for Tuesday, March 18th at 5:00 pm, and will be announced each day to remind the athletes and parents of the upcoming date. Practice will be held after school each day until 4:30 after the first track meet. If we are practicing inside the building due to inclement weather, the practice time will always end at 4:30. The athletes will be allowed to contact parents and guardians to let them know about the change.
This year the school calendar has several Teacher Work Days and Holidays set in the calendar during the track season.
Friday, March 14th, & Monday, March 17th are Teacher Workdays
Thursday, April 17th - Friday 25th is Spring Break
There will NOT be any track practice when the students are out of school.

Directions to the Meets:
Directions to all the meets can be found on the West Alexander School Website under "Athletics" scroll down till you see the rectangle with the "Directions to NWMS Conference Middle School" in it.
PRACTICE + PARTICIPATION: If your athlete decides to participate in Track, they must abide by the West Alexander Athletic Policy concerning behavior, academics and attendance. Each athlete will be asked to read and sign a behavior contract regarding behavior, academics and attendance. After the first track meet, each day of practice will conclude at 4:30 unless told otherwise. Please make arrangements to pick your athlete up at that time. If the athlete cannot be picked up by 4:45, please make arrangements with someone to pick them up. Each athlete participating in practice will be expected to dress out each day and participate unless they have a written excuse or are absent from school that day. The athletes must let the coaches know personally if they are at school and leave early due to sickness. (Not by another student!) Appointments are understood in reference to dental, funerals and doctors, but athletes missing to have their hair cut or attending a birthday party is unacceptable. Please talk to your athlete about these issues before planning on going out for track.
SPIKES + UNIFORM: Please do not purchase spikes until we see which events the athlete will be participating in. Some athletes through the years have purchased spikes before the season started. They later found out they would be running long distances, and they would then need running shoes, NOT spikes. Also, when it is time to purchase spikes for the sprinters or jumpers, the spike length must be (1/4 to 3/8 pyramid) or (6mm to 9mm). (I would suggest buying some extra spikes so they can be changed before each meet.) For the athletes that qualify to go to the meets, they will be issued a jersey. They will need their own pair of black shorts and a white undershirt. (tee shirt) Please make sure your athlete is dressed each day for practice with regards to the weather and appropriately according to school dress code. Some days in March it may be warm and other days it may be in the 40's. I encourage athletes to have their shorts on but have some sweatpants and hoodies for extra warmth. This allows them to take them off and on as needed while practicing that day. I would suggest writing the athlete's names or initials inside the sweats, hoodies, and on the water bottles. That way, with 90-plus athletes, it is easier to find who the clothing belongs to when it is left outside. Thanks for your help in this matter.
MEETS: Our meets are run and controlled by the high schools that host the meets, so if there is a rain out in their high school meet schedule, this can affect our schedule. The 2025 Middle School Track Schedule is listed below. If there are any changes, they will be listed on the site and explained to the athletes.

April 3rd Thursday @ South Caldwell High School
April 10th Thursday @ Alexander Central High School
May 1st Thursday @ Hibriten High School

In lieu of having to take money at the gate for admission for each track meet, the conference is going to charge each track member a one-time fee of $20. If there are siblings on the team, only a total of $20 is required. This one-time fee will cover the entire family when going to each track meet. This money will be taken anytime before the first track meet, so if you want to send it with your athlete, make checks out to WAMS or send cash. A receipt will be sent home after all funds have been collected.
All parents have been asked by the high school officials to remain in the stands during the meets. Exception: At Alexander Central, if your athlete is throwing the discus or shot, you will need to walk up behind the field house to watch the throws. The throwing pads are located on the football practice field close to the central office side. If you have any questions, please ask.
All meets begin at 4:00 PM. The meets usually last from 4:00 until 6:45 PM. Please be on time to pick up your athlete. *For all track meets, the track team will be taken to the meet and dropped off. There will NOT be a ride back to West after the meets. Each athlete MUST have their guardian sign them out before leaving the meet. Consequence of not being signed out after the meet is running ONE MILE before practice the next day of practice. We must account for each athlete when going and leaving each meet.
The field events usually begin as close to 4:15 as possible. The Open 800 is the first non-scored event that begins the meet. Some school meets place the boys and girls together on the Open 800 for the sake of time. The following events are scored events and are started with the girls followed by the boys for each of the following (400 Meter Relay, 100 Meters, Mile, 100 Meter Relay, 400 Meters, 800 Meters, 200 Meters and 200 Meter Relay).
For the Field Events: (Order of event is subject to change)
Girls high jump followed by Boys
Boys long jump followed by Girls
Boys shot put followed by Girls
Girls discus followed by Boys
It is important to understand how the coaches run the track program at West Alexander. We allow all athletes to be on the team as long as they are eligible and follow the rules and expectations, but we only take the ones to the meets that qualify for the events. The others have the opportunity to work each day at practice to improve their skills in hopes of qualifying at some future meet. All athletes are welcome to go to the meet even if they did not qualify, but they will have to ride to the meet with their parents. There is only so much room on the activity bus and it takes around 44 athletes to fill all the spots for a typical meet.
For the Shot and Discus throwers only: If there are large numbers that come out for these two positions, there may be a cut due to only being able to take the top 3 girls and top 3 boys to the meets.
Behavior: All athletes are expected to abide by the discipline policy set forth by the school. Any athlete can be removed from the team if they are not abiding by the agreement that each athlete signed at the beginning of the season.
As another reminder before the first track meet, there will be a mandatory parents' meeting regarding Concussions / Medical Information that all parents / guardians must sign forms before their athlete can participate in the meet. This meeting will be held in the gym after practice on Tuesday, March 18th at 5:00 pm before the first meet.
There is a concession stand at the meets where snacks and drinks can be purchased. If you have any questions, please email dbrown@alexander.k12.nc.us or call (828)495-4611 Coach Brown and leave a message and I will get back in touch with you. My planning period is 8:00 - 8:40 if you need to speak to me. It is best to send an email (dbrown@alexander.k12.nc.us or leave a telephone message (828)495-4611 (Mr. Brown's phone ext. 4202) because I can't always interrupt class to field phone questions. Thanks for your understanding.
Coach Brown, Coach Noble and Coach Oxentine
The following documents are to be read and signed by parents or guardians of track athletes. By reading over the forms, this will make the Parent Team Meeting much quicker. If you print the signature forms and fill them out before the meeting, please turn them in after the meeting. If you need a hard copy to fill out, they will be provided at the team meeting on March the 12th. Three forms that must be filled out or signed are, Informed Consent Sign-off sheet front and back, Parent / Athlete Concussion Statement two pages - one for the parent and one for the athlete. By signing the back of the Informed Consent Sign-off sheet you are stating that you have read through the West Alexander Athletic Policy.
