EIS Case Coordinator, Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium
Matthew was in kindergarten when he was first called queer by a peer. It was supposed to be a slur, but instead became a spring board to owning the label without (much) shame by the time he was in middle school. He was introduced to HIV stigma when his first high school boyfriend was diagnosed as positive. He is proud to have been kicked out of a homophobic and racist household at age 15, and uses those experiences to drive the equity work he does now. Since moving to Alaska in 2012, Matthew has worked to overcome his East Coast inner-city upbringing to become an outdoorsman, and has discovered a love of dip-netting, camping, small game hunting, fishing, and hiking with his partner of 12 years and their two dogs. He has spent over 20 years of his career working with, and for, intersectional queer communities. He is always looking for additional opportunities to put those skills to work in Alaska.
HIV/EIS Program Services Manager, Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium
Laurali serves as an LGBTQA ally as the Senior Program Manager for the Early Intervention Services Department at ANTHC. She also serves as the co-chair for the Western Regions Ryan White board that specifically develops trauma informed practices for community service providers and medical services focusing on LGBTQA and HIV affected populations. Laurali has lived in Alaska since 2014, and worked with peer partners presenting on HIV stigma related issues to medical providers, social workers and related health care professionals. Laurali believes in the power of conversation, and is a strong advocate for the HIV/EIS Consumer Advisory Board group. In this group, Laurali mentors LGBTQA peers in public speaking events. A panel from Alaska will be presenting on transgender issues in rural settings during the plenary session at the 2020 National Ryan White Conference on HIV Care & Treatment.
