Principal Apprentices (Education Leadership) -- Click here for resources
The Strategic Use of Nationally Registered Apprenticeships for Educators (SUNRAE) Program at UAA offers several teacher apprentice pathways.
The program is offered in partnership between your sponsoring organization (ASCF, BBRCTE, DEED, RurAL CAP, SCC, and SHI) and UAA. Potential apprentices must be accepted into both programs.
Your sponsor will process eligibility for the apprenticeship program in accordance with the Department of Labor.
UAA will process eligibility in accordance with UAA admissions policies.
Note: There will be a significant amount of paperwork at the beginning, as you complete onboarding applications from both your sponsor and UAA.
Your sponsor will tell you which SUNRAE pathway you should apply for. Review the pathways and check with your sponsor to ensure you're applying for the appropriate admissions pathway.
💡 Check out our step-by-step guides to help you work through these steps 📣
Step 1: Approval to be an apprentice from your sponsor (ASCF, BBRCTE, DEED, RurAL CAP, SCC, SHI)
Step 2: Apply to be a student at UAA Note: The application to be accepted as a student at UAA is in addition to your application to be a registered apprentice with your sponsor.
There are deadlines to consider when applying for admission. If the deadline has passed and it wants to charge you a late fee, send us an email for a code. If the deadline has passed too far and it won't let you apply at all, send us an email UAA.teacherapprentice@alaska.edu.
You may be required to submit your high school transcripts and/or transcripts from previous universities. More information is on the transcripts page.
If you have a degree from a university outside of the US, please follow these instructions to have your transcripts evaluated. The process can take several weeks.
Step 3: Complete our Intake form.
Step 4: Create a UAOnline account (you may have done this in step 2)
Step 5: Complete a FERPA Authorization Form. Completion of the FERPA Authorization Form allows your Sponsor to pay your course fees, pay for books, and view your grades/progress.
Step 6: Access your UAA email and consider forwarding options.
Step 7: Take placement tests, if applicable. Applicable to SUNRAE 2, 3, 4
You do not need to take placement tests if:
You are in SUNRAE 1, 5, or 6 (OEC, Post-Baccalaureate Certificate, or Education Leadership)
You already have an associate's degree (even if from a different university)
You have qualifying scores on the SAT or ACT
If you're unsure, send us an email
For more information, check out the placement tests website
Step 8: Email us your Background Check information (Applicable to all apprentices)
Some UAA classes require students to complete fieldwork hours. In this instance, UAA collects copies of apprentices' background checks.
Request a copy of your background check from your employer.
If your current employer does not require a background check, please have Human Resources or your supervisor send us a letter confirming your clearance/authorization to work with children at your place of employment.
Individual plans are created for each apprentice. The plans are in Google Sheets. Email us if you need a link to your plan: UAA.teacherapprentice@alaska.edu
Sample plans, estimated for taking 3 classes per semester and 1 class per summer. Additional time may be required if remedial math and writing classes are needed, or if apprentices take less than 3 classes per semester.
SUNRAE 1 - OEC, 18 credits, 1 school year
SUNRAE 2 - AAS, 60 credits, 3 school years [OEC + 2 years]
SUNRAE 3 - BA, 120 credits, 6 school years [AAS + 3 years]
SUNRAE 4 - AA, 60 credits, 3 school years
SUNRAE 5 - PBCT, 45 credits, 2 school years [best to start in spring or summer]

Order books - You should be able to charge books to your account. Let us know if you cannot.
A week before class- Check your UAA email for any alerts from your professors
A day before class- Log in to Blackboard to access your classes. Blackboard typically opens up a day or two before classes so you can look around and find the syllabus, instructor contact info, important deadlines, and any Zoom links needed for class. Be sure that you have the correct books; double-check the syllabus and email the professor if needed.
The first week of class- Attend class, read the syllabus. If you get overwhelmed, the drop deadline is the first week or two of classes.
During the semester, there are a variety of resources to help you be successful in your academic journey.
Math:
Online Zoom Math Tutoring for MATH 054 - MATH 251. No appointments are necessary, just click into the Zoom and tutors will be there to greet & help you! Sundays - Fridays: 6 PM - 10 PM. More information can be found on the Math Lab website.
Writing:
The Writing Resources page has excellent tutorials and information. Check out the Writing Lab for additional writing help opportunities, including Zoom and email options.
Other:
The Statewide Library Electronic Doorway (SLED) through Tutor.com provides additional tutoring.
What does it mean when a professor says, "Cite Your Sources?"
What is APA Format?
The course syllabus is your roadmap for staying on track. Take time to thoroughly read it and note important policies (including AI policies), resources, and assignment deadlines. This sets you up for success in managing your time and responsibilities effectively.
Your professors want to support your success! Remember to communicate with them early and often. If you need to arrive late, leave early, or miss class, sending a quick email before class keeps them informed.
If you need some extra time to complete an assignment, go ahead and ask. Most professors are often willing to grant reasonable extensions, especially if you request them before the due date.
Keeping the lines of communication open in a positive, proactive way will serve you well.
Dropping: You can drop a class before the drop deadline (typically the first one or two weeks of class). Dropping a class removes the class from your transcript, and you (or your sponsor) will not be charged for the course. There is no penalty for dropping a class.
Withdrawing: You can withdraw from a course after the add/drop period but before the withdrawal deadline. Unlike failing grades, W's do not impact your GPA calculation - they simply indicate you withdrew from the course. A "W" grade will appear on your transcript. Important considerations:
W grades can affect your academic standing and future financial aid eligibility.
Your future funding options through your sponsor may be impacted (refunds are not issued for classes receiving a “W”).
Before withdrawing, check with your sponsor to understand the specific implications for your situation.

For example, they can help you: build note-taking or study skills; learn skills to reduce procrastination; set achievable goals; develop a homework or study schedule; learn skills to overcome test anxiety, navigate online platforms like Google Docs, UAOnline, and Blackboard; learn new skills for creating PowerPoint presentations; and more!
The Admissions Office can assist you in becoming a degree-seeking student.

The Dates and Deadlines Page lists important deadlines for registering, dropping, and withdrawing from classes.
There are registration deadlines. In general, you can register for classes up to one week after they start.
Dropping classes: Allows you to remove a class from your schedule. It does not go on your transcript, and you don’t get charged tuition. Typically, this is only allowed in the first two weeks of class.
Withdrawing from classes: Allows you to withdraw from a class, but your sponsor does not get a refund for the tuition, and you receive a ‘W’ on your transcript. This could impact future financial aid eligibility and eligibility to continue with the registered apprenticeship program.
The Financial Aid Office can help you apply for additional aid and grants.

Students pursuing an associate’s or bachelor’s degree may need to take course Placement Tests for writing and math classes. This should be done during the first semester of attendance.
The Learning Commons offers tutoring for every subject. The writing lab can assist you with APA formatting, citing your sources, and improving writing for any class. Math tutoring is available. Academic coaching on topics such as time management is available.
