Starvation Gulch is an annual UAF tradition that started in 1923. Held around the end of September, it is a competitive week that highlights the "passing of the torch of knowledge," encourages students to actively engage with others and helpfully serve on their campus. The competition began when students were challenged by UAF's first president, Charles E. Bunnell, to build fake wooden towns that would later serve as fuel for bonfires the following night. The celebration has evolved numerous times over the years, this year included, and we're happy to announce that Starvation Gulch has been adapted to be celebrated by students this year even in the face of a pandemic!

We've taken the competitive spirit of Starvation Gulch and channeled that into a virtual week of activities for students including an individual and group contest, a nostalgia themed esports tournament, and sustainability service project challenge. Events are complete with exciting grand prizes, cool giveaway bags for the lucky first 250 students to grab one at our tabling events, and the chance to get connected on campus with other students and clubs.
