Goal: Students will be able to build on their background knowledge and summarize their learning by analyzing a dance, read a story that goes with the dance and watch an interview with Sean Topkok about the dance.
Introduce unit through Building Background Knowledge protocol.
For the "mystery piece" have students view the Fox dance segment of the grade 7 video.
Have students discuss what they already know about the Fox dance (can have a range of connections to prior knowledge).
Activating Schema: Students list or draw their prior knowledge about this topic in the first column of their paper, either in groups and/or as a class.
For the "Reading a Common Text" step, have students read Fox and Raven story from Alaska Native Knowledge Network .
Students complete center column with new knowledge
Students view video segment of Sean describing how he created the dance based on the Fox story and also how dance contributes to health and wellness.
Students use the third column of their paper to summarize their learning.
Students share their summaries in a whole class discussion.

Building Background Knowledge Protocol
Estimated time: 1 hour
Goal: Students research regional health and wellness practices.
If possible, invite or visit an Elder to share their knowledge about health and wellness activities such as dance, games, physical fitness, medicinal plants in the region.
Have them share what they already know about health and wellness activities and practices. (Can list their knowledge on a chart)
Share Sean's TED talk video. Have students listen and watch for how Sean uses dance i to tell a story and support health, wellness and dignity.
Students share at least one new thing they learned.
Elders in the community who can share knowledge about health and wellness practices
Estimated time: 1 hour
Goal: Students will be able to make a basic drum.
Link to previous learning by reviewing their summaries.
Tell them today they will be making the first stage of their drum. (Watch "How to Make a Drum" steps 1-6)
Show whole video (20 min.) and ask students to pay close attention to how you make a drum. Perhaps take notes if appropriate.
Students create drums, and attach handles.
