Health and wellness is important in any community. Children need to grow up in a healthy environment. Their environment includes self, family, and community. When you have a sober mind, you have a sober spirit.
Students will:
Interview an Elder about health and wellness practices and activities
Identify healthy activities and how to express them in a drawing for a drum.
Study examples of regional drums and drawings and analyze the way drawings can be used to decorate drums.
Make a drum, using embroidery hoop and airplane fabric.
Create multiple drafts of drawings using peer critique/feedback to improve.
Draw final drawing onto the drum with black sharpies
Learn a dance from local drummers if available
Culminate the unit with a display of drums.

Reflect: Learning to think and talk with others about an aspect of one’s work or working process, and learning to judge one’s own work and working process and the work of others.
Using a critique/feedback protocol, students will identify ways to improve their drawings and complete multiple drafts before transferring their images onto the airplane fabric.
