Networking & Buffet Lunch
In April 2024, the Moving Forward Together project, led by Dr. Sarah Trainor, provided a buffet-style lunch and relationship-building event in the Globe Room at Elvey Building. Attendees learned about the current status and future goals of the project for the first part, and later participated in breakout groups focused on each of these specific MFT grant lynchpins:

Dr. Cana Uluak Itchuaqiyaq
Esteemed Iñupiaq scholar and recognized leader in equitable Arctic research initiatives, Dr. Cana Uluak Itchuaqiyaq, visited the UAF campus the week of September 18-22, 2023 and held a variety of workshops, mentoring sessions, open discussion, and 1x1 meetings open to different audiences:
Evaluating Equitable Arctic Research and Indigenous Leadership in Research: An open discussion about strategies for evaluating equitable Arctic research and the role of Indigenous leadership in these contexts. Participants exchanged insights with Dr. Itchuaqiyaq on shaping a long-term evaluation of Arctic research methods, influencing future research practices, policies and funding.
Cultural Humility Workshop for Faculty & Staff: Following a meet-and-greet lunch, Dr. Itchuaqiyaq led an interactive workshop addressing the basics of working respectfully with Indigenous communities and important role that cultural humility plays in that work.
Indigenous Student Mentorship Sessions: Held at the Gathering Room of the Brooks Building over two days, Dr. Itchuaqiyaq provided guidance on being successful, community-centered, and grounded in academic spaces to help Indigenous students (particularly in the Geosciences) navigate their educational journey with heart and strategy.
Cultural Humility Workshop for Students: This interactive workshop addressed the basics or working respectfully with Indigenous communities and the important role that cultural humility plays in that work. This workshop was designed for all students who wanted to learn how to conduct effective, innovative, and respectful research in and with Arctic and Indigenous communities.
Dr. Itchuaqiyaq's first visit to UAF was funded by USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture, Hatch grant #1018914 in support of the MFT project
Dr. Itchuaqiyaq returned the UAF campus the week of October 23-27, 2023 and held workshops and mentoring sessions built on the foundational September events. She also provided time slots for 1x1 meetings with administrators, staff, students and faculty.
Deepening Cultural Humility Workshop for Faculty & Staff: This engaging and dynamic workshop provided attendees the opportunity to reflect on the essential principles of working respectfully with Indigenous communities and to learn practical steps for achieving and amplifying cultural humility. Dr. Itchuaqiyaq also provided innovative ways to shape and refine research practices.
Indigenous Student Mentorship Sessions: Two 2-hour sessions were held for local and remote students with Dr. Itchuaqiyaq providing valuable insights on achieving success, staying community-focused, and grounded in academic spaces to help Indigenous students (particularly in the Geosciences) learn to navigate their educational journey with passion and strategy.

The introductory workshop series for the Moving Forward Together project was held for two days in May 2023 and featured acclaimed speakers, Unangan elder and renowned advocate for Indigenous rights/wisdom and harmonious relationship with the Earth, Ilarion Merculieff, and the Director of the Difficult Dialogues Initiative and Associate Director of the Center for Advancing Faculty Excellence at the University of Alaska Anchorage, Libby Roderick.
While the workshops were specifically aimed at non-Indigenous faculty, staff and administrators - Indigenous colleagues and UAF students were also welcomed in order to facilitate bridging the gap between Western practices and traditional Native ways of knowing. Learn more here.
