Remote Sensing

Visible and Infrared satellite images

Daily weather imagery for areas offshore of northern Alaska, provided by the NOAA National Weather Service in Fairbanks.

Visible or infrared images are useful for mapping large-scale lead patterns in the sea ice, which can be used to interpret ice motion and predict areas likely to fracture in the near future

Objectives

  • Monitor lead patterns in Chukchi and Beaufort Seas
  • Identify patterns likely to result in ice deformation near ICEX camp
