Loving life at the Lawrence Hall of Science!
The future is something that can be difficult for humans to think about. We all have our own problems in the present, so the trials and tribulations of the future are most often not the first things on our mind. However, when we give ourselves time to reflect and imagine, it can be fun to think about the future that you may live.
Typically, when I think about the future, what comes to mind is the type of job I will have and where I would live. Rarely do I think about what type of lifestyle I will lead. Nonetheless, this essay has prompted me to ponder this exact question. What lifestyle do I want to lead? After days of reflecting on my values and things I hold dear, I've come to the conclusion that something similar to what my life looks like now works for me. This would manifest itself in a simpler lifestyle, while still holding an emphasis on exploring new places and possible experiences I haven’t already encountered.
While pondering what type of lifestyle I’d like to lead in the future is intriguing, that isn’t the question people typically have in mind when they ask you about your future. They want to know the career. Now this is something I have thought about for hours on end.
After much deliberation with myself, I have been pretty set on teaching for a while now. Teaching is something that I would excel at, and as long as I am teaching a subject that I am passionate about like History, Economics, or English, I am confident that I will maintain a passion for teaching throughout my future career. Those who I admire are routinely those who are knowledgeable about a broad range of topics, but can still understand the intricacies of them. This is likely why I have taken such a fondness towards teaching, or at least the idea of it.

“But what is your major goal in life?” maybe ask. This is a question that I think not many of us have a concrete answer to, not because we lack goals, but because we have too many of them. We also share many of these goals, almost to the point where it would almost be strange to say you didn’t hold them.
Like most people, I would say that one of my major goals in life is to achieve financial freedom. I am not trying to be rich, but I want to be able to live comfortably. I don’t typically use my money to gain more happiness than what I already have, so having excess money is not something that is appealing to me. Many people also ask regarding people’s future “Where do you want to go before you are 30?” and to that I say it matters not what age you are when you take a trip, it matters more what you make out of the trip.
I would like to learn a variety of skills throughout my lifetime. I think a better way to describe my relationship with these skills is for myself to hone them rather than learn them. I say this because I have dipped my toes in a variety of skills, but I never had the patience or persistence to keep at it and really hone my skill. I also would like to play the harmonica. I never have really tried to do that, but I feel like I would really enjoy it.
