There is a registered nurse on campus during school hours. We advise all children to report illness and injury to a teacher. If during break, reports are made to the teacher on supervision. Our school nurse treats all minor cuts and scratches that are reported. Parents are not notified of mild, day-to-day bumps, scratches, etc. The school has first aid kits and an Automated External Defibrillator (AED’s X5) available at various locations on campus for necessary treatment. Any head injuries that are attended to by the nurse are reported to the parents at home.
In the case of a serious injury or illness which requires immediate doctor evaluation, the parents are notified immediately and the nurse will go to the closest hospital emergency room to have the student assessed and treated.
If a student needs to go home, the nurse will inform the parents (see below). Parents are to pick up their child within one hour from the time the nurse notifies them. If the parents are unable to do so, they must make arrangements with another adult. We cannot keep sick children for prolonged periods in the Nursing Office. Please assist by picking up your child promptly once you are notified of an illness or injury.
The following processes, expectations, and procedures are in place for the MS Nurse Office:
Students are encouraged to visit the nurse office during class breaks or lunch periods.
Students are required to possess a pass for Nurse office visits, except in emergency situations.
The nurse office pass is at the back of each student’s planner
Students are not permitted to go to the nurse office without a “Nurse Pass”
Departure time from the classroom, accompanied by the teacher's signature must be clearly indicated.
If a student visits the nurse without a "Nurse Pass" and it's not an emergency, the nurse will direct the student back to the classroom to obtain one.
Students have a maximum of 20 minutes, starting from the moment they leave a class until they return to the class.
In cases where students need to remain in the Health Office for more than 20 minutes, the following procedures are implemented:
The nurse will inform MS Office via short email of delay: not well, resting etc.
Should the nurse opt to send a student home, she will subsequently notify the MS office and include the current teacher of her decision.
MS office notifies all teachers or modifies students attendance in powerschool
The nurse will issue a gate pass
Students who have been sent home by the nurse will wait for their transport in the Nurse Office.
If students become ill or injured and visit the nurse's office during break, an email will be sent by the nurse to inform the MS Office and/or current teacher.
Students who do not follow these rules will be subject to the tardy-absence policy. A student who is out of class for more than 20 minutes will be marked absent for that class for that day.
Teachers will check corresponding times to ensure that students have followed the procedures and have returned directly to class from the nurse office.
If times do not match, the student is sent to the MS office by the teacher.
Students may not nap or sleep in the Health Office as it is not a rest station or sleep clinic. Students who come to school tired must choose between attending class or going home to rest. Parents are responsible for ensuring students get adequate sleep at night.
For frequent fliers to the Health Office, the division Principal or AP will call home to inform the parents and inquire about a possible health concern.
A frequent flier is defined as a student who visits the health office more than 3 times per week for two weeks.
The nurse will phone a parent in case of any of the below. If a parent cannot be reached via telephone, the parent is notified via email.
Injury to head/eye (scratch, fall, hit, etc.)
Soiling
Nose bleed (severe)
Vomiting
Excessive green or yellow discharge from the nose or eyes
When directed by MS Office
Nurse’s discretion
If a parent or guardian cannot be reached via telephone, depending upon need, the school may take immediate action in collaboration with the MS Office, Nursing Office, Facilities, and Superintendent to transport the student to an outside medical facility. The nurse must inform the MS Office of all emergency parent pick-ups. Fever of 37.8C/100℉ or above. A student may return to school after 24hrs of being fever free and without the use of fever reducing medication.
Excessive vomiting
Persistent diarrhea
Injury or illness of a serious nature that the nurse determines a doctor's attention is required
Any contagious disease (e.g. "Pink Eye" or conjunctivitis with symptoms such as drainage from the eye, redness, swelling, burning, itching or runny eyes).
Head lice or pediculosis
Severe rash that cannot be identified
Complaints of discomfort or pain which does not go away after a rest
When directed by MS Office
Nurse’s discretion
Students are not allowed to carry medication on their person unless otherwise authorized.
The school nurse must administer all medication that is taken during school hours. Medicines are administered to the students only with written permission from the doctor or the parents. Any prescription drugs required by a student during school hours must be given to the nurse complete with the student’s name, class, time and dose to be given. The nurse administers all medications (unless the child is participating on a field trip, in which case, the teacher will administer the required medication). All medicines must be left at the nurse’s office unless special arrangements have been made with the nurse. Misuse of prescribed drugs is considered an act subject to disciplinary action. It is extremely important to complete the health form which is revised annually.
Please see “Medication Request Form” HERE The student is responsible for arriving at the Nurse’s office on time for their medicine. All medicines must be left at the school clinic unless special arrangements have been made with the Nurse.
Our learning environments support the natural curiosity of our students and therefore incorporates natural elements such as plants, soil/sand, flowers, and fruits/vegetables as well as the care for several live animals of different species to include but not limited to birds, lizards, and small mammals (guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, etc.). Should a child be allergic in such conditions, accommodations may be possible within our program parameters, but cannot be guaranteed. Modifications to the program such as removal and/or relocation of an animal(s)/natural elements (during student attendance) cannot be accommodated.
With 60 nationalities and a transient expatriate community, AIS-R is NOT an allergen-free (nut, milk, wheat, fish, etc.) campus and due to our outsourced food caterers, we cannot guarantee that food prepared in our Dining Halls or food brought to school by other students is nut/allergen free. It is the expectation of the parent to inform the nurse of their children’s allergies. No child is admitted to AIS-R without a completed medical form. Should updates in a child’s medical condition (that may include newly discovered allergies) change at anytime, AIS-R must be notified by the listed guardian in AIS-R’s Skyward system. Questions/Inquiries regarding our health protocols may be directed to the AIS-R nurse - Artien Kuiper - akuiper@aisr.org
Common childhood diseases can easily be transmissible through a classroom. It is very important that parents notify the school as soon as a doctor has diagnosed a student with a communicable disease.
Early reporting helps the school alert the parents of students who may have been exposed to the disease, which, in turn, can help control the spread of the particular disease.
If a student is diagnosed with a contagious disease, he/she can return to school after a written permission from his/her doctor. The note needs to be sent to the Nursing Office prior to returning to class.
It is extremely important that we have up-to-date emergency numbers and information on each child. If you are unable to provide us with this complete information at the time you register your child, or if the information changes, please contact us. To update or change emergency information already on file, please call the Middle School Office, the school nurse, email powerschool@aisr.org, or update the information in your Powerschool account.
Thank you for being a responsible parent!
