A mandatory reflection session may be assigned to a student as a consequence for inappropriate behavior or repeated work incompletion. These reflection sessions are designed to help students grow from their mistakes, and take responsibility for their decisions, while developing actions to prevent a recurrence. Reflection sessions may be served during breaks or after school between 3:30 - 4:30 at the discretion of the Grade Leader and MS Administration. If a student repeatedly misses or refuses to attend an assigned reflection session, the situation may escalate and result in further consequences, including but limited to a parent meeting and/or eventually suspension from school.
In cases where a student is suspected of using a device inappropriately (either on or off campus), bring contraband items to school, etc. an AIS-R administrator and/or faculty member has the right to search the device or personal belonging of the student, to include, but not limited to: bag, pencil case, wallet, pocket, device, phone, car, locker and PE locker. In turn, AIS-R administrators and Faculty Members are in loco-parentis while school is in session, on school trips, during after-school activities etc. and thus have the right to question students who are believed to be in violation of school rules by using devices inappropriately or bringing contraband items to school, or are believed to be witnesses to a violation of school rules and Core Values involving using devices inappropriately or bringing contraband items to school. Parents will be contacted when such an incident occurs and appropriate disciplinary consequences will be enacted once a thorough inquiry has taken place.Devices include password protected devices, where the student is honor-bound to provide the AIS-R Administrator/Faculty member with the password if any of the above incidents occur.
Students may be removed from classes and not allowed to participate in activities for a period to be determined by the MS Administration. In all cases of suspension, students will not be allowed to participate in any school activities during the period of suspension, and a parent conference will be required before the student may return to regular classes. Suspensions remove a student from the learning community to provide time for reflection on the core values and their commitment to abide by them. A student may service an In School Suspension (ISS) or an Out of School Suspension (OSS). A recommendation is made to the AIS-R Superintendent for review and final decision regarding how many days the student will serve the suspension. In all cases, parents are notified.
A conditional enrollment is designed for students who either have not met the terms of their Academic and/ or Behavior Improvement Plan or who may be newly accepted to AIS-R and need to demonstrate adherence to specific academic and behavioral standards in order to maintain enrollment at AIS-R. A student may be placed on conditional enrollment under the following circumstances:
Accepted to AIS-R on conditional enrollment
Placed on conditional enrollment as a result of poor academic performance or an unsuccessful Academic Improvement Plan
Placed on conditional enrollment based on behavioral reasons or an unsuccessful Behavior Improvement Plan
When a student is accepted to the Middle School on a conditional enrollment based on prior school records, the student and their parents will meet with the MS Counselor and the MS Administration to discuss the terms of acceptance. Conditional status will be determined at the end of each semester and will be based on the student’s academic and / or behavioral performance.
Students making sufficient progress will be removed from conditional enrollment.
Students who have not met their conditions will remain on conditional enrollment status for the next semester. Parents are informed of this status in person with possible outcomes explained.
Conditional Enrollment can not be extended for more than two semesters.
In order to successfully meet the requirements of conditional enrollment, students are required to:
Receiving no “LM” in Mathematics, Humanities or Science for a semester grade.
Maintain an overall average progress rating of “EMG” or above in all year-long graded courses.
No more than two overall course progress ratings of “EMG” in year long courses.
Procedure:
The student and parents meet with the MS Administration to review the conditions set forth for their continued enrollment at AIS-R.
A meeting is held at the end of the semester to review progress and ensure conditions set forth are being met.
Students on conditional enrollment are required to successfully meet their conditions for one or two consecutive semesters. However, if insufficient progress is made after the first semester, as deemed by the MS Administration, the family will be recommended for a separation from AIS-R at the discretion of the AIS-R Superintendent.
A meeting is held at the end of the second semester on conditional enrollment to review student progress.
Student meeting with success are removed from conditional enrollment
Students not meeting with success, as deemed by the MS Administration, will be recommended for withdrawal from AIS-R at the discretion of the AIS-R Superintendent.
A conditional enrollment cannot extend longer than two consecutive semesters, after which a decision must be reached (success or recommendation to separate from AIS-R at Superintendent discretion).
At AIS-R, students do not earn credits at the middle school level. However, there are specific course standards that must be met in order for students to be promoted to the next grade level. Students are required to maintain a passing grade in each Reporting Strand (minimum “Emerging”) in Mathematics, Humanities and Sciences and an overall average progress rating of “Emerging” or above in all year-long courses. An overall progress statement of “failing to meet grade level expectations” indicates limited proficiency on the majority of curricular standards and concepts.
Students who do not pass Humanities, Mathematics, Sciences or multiple core courses, will be invited to discuss possible next steps:
Course remediation: Summer school make up work, online accredited course work, etc. If successful, the student will progress to the following year on Conditional Enrollment status.
Repeating the grade: A student may be recommended to repeat the current grade level if it is seen as in the best interest of the student deemed by the MS Administration and family. A student repeating the grade level will automatically be placed on Conditional Enrollment.
Separation from AIS-R: Students who do not meet the promotional requirements or who fail to meet the terms of their Conditional Enrollment will not qualify for promotion and may result in a recommendation to withdraw from AIS-R. A final decision for promotion will be made in consultation with the student, parents, MS Administration and Superintendent.
Students who are passing Humanities, Mathematics, Sciences but who are failing another core course (PE or Arabic) may be placed on an Academic Improvement Plan.
If the student is already on an Academic Improvement Plan, the student may be placed on Conditional Enrollment and required to participate in additional support interventions as determined by the MS Administration.
Students who are below grade level expectations in two or more core subjects may be placed on an Academic Improvement Plan.
If the student is already on an Academic Improvement Plan, the student may be placed on Conditional Enrollment and required to participate in additional support interventions as determined by the MS Administration.
