Dear middle school students!
Here is a summary of WHAT was discussed with the Grade 6 students but it will be useful for all. If you prefer listening, here is the below info as a video. If you just want to read it, read below:
Have you organised your Google Drive?
Have you made folders for each subject? And moved resources into relevant folders?
If not, do it now! I will be checking next week :)
Have you ’starred’ useful docs so that they are quick/easy to find?
You SHOULD ‘star’ your landing pages - if you haven’t yet, do it now!
Have you made docs that you need for Friday ‘available offline'
If not, do it now!
How to save things offline
Take a screenshot! OR:
Google docs - activate ‘available offline'
Save to ‘Notability'
Save to ‘Books'
How to use notability
Have you opened up Notability and experimented with all the features on the ‘Welcome’ note?
If not, do it now! Notability could become your new best friend
Remember you can open any doc/pdf/worksheet/screenshot on Notability and make notes, highlight, annotate AND save to Google Drive (ready to upload to ManageBac)
How to download study guides into books
This can be done for any document and will make it available offline
The correct naming convention
This will make your life - and DEFINITELY your teachers life - so much easier! Please make sure that documents are named correctly:
jsmithEng6A_OdysseyEssay
(First initial / last name / subject & section / title of assignment)

Where to find Tech Tips on the AISL Student Landing Page
One of the tabs on the student portal is called Tech@AISL - use it to find out more about ManageBac, DocScan, Notability, resizing videos to make them easier to upload and LOTS more!
ManageBac is THE main tool that you all need to ‘master’ whether we are in school or on ‘distance learning’. ManageBac itself has a few student tutorials AND youtube has a LOAD more - problem solve… AND please reach out if you have any challenges or problems with ManageBac.
ManageBac is the platform we use for assignments/tasks, grading and reporting in Secondary. If you were with us last year, the email address will be the same. If you are new to AISL, please follow these instructions:
Check your email for a 'Welcome to ManageBac' and click on 'click to set password'. Again choose a password that is memorable - maybe similar or the same as your gmail password.
Go to https://aislusaka.managebac.com and use your email address and the password you created above.
Watch this mini video tutorial to share key sections of ManageBac:
Main features addressed in this video: Dashboard, Calendar, Timetables (= schedule), Classes, Reports, How to change password
Step 1: Save file to Google Drive.
Make sure it is in a format that MB recognises (so pdf, word or Google Doc - NOT Pages).
If NOT, ‘Send a copy’ ‘as pdf’ to Google Drive.
'Rename' the file as per the 'naming conventions' below.
Step 2: Go to the ManageBac task
‘Choose file’ for upload and ‘Browse’
Go to ‘Locations’, click on ‘Google Drive’ and select file**
Click on ‘Upload files’ and wait for it to finish ‘processing
**If Google Drive is not showing, click on the 3 dots, edit and check ‘Google Drive’ OR use this tutorial to help you!
Sometimes uploading to ManageBac from Google Drive may not work (there's a glitch with the current IOS14 update) - it's always good to have an alternative way!
SO....: follow the instructions above but INSTEAD of saving and uploading to/from Google Drive, use 'Save to files' instead and then then upload 'from my iPad.
Watch this video tutorial to learn more!
Did you know that when you take a picture of your handwritten or handcrafted work to upload to ManageBac that it creates a HUGE file? This file will eat up your data bundle and take an extraordinary amount of time to upload.
Try converting your written work to a PDF using a scanner app. DocScan is already on iPads and available for smartphones. This tutorial is easy to follow - and the app is VERY easy to use...!
There are also other apps that are just as easy to use.
CamScanner comes highly recommended
Mr. Potts says Notebloc has the best reviews, is free and exports as pdf or jpg to Email/Drive etc - it looks very easy to use - check out this video tutorial to find out more.
Notability is the app of choice for note-taking at AISL. It’s easy to make, highlight and annotate your notes as well as enrich your notes with images and audio.
It is also the best way to annotate, complete and over-write a PDF file.
The notes can be organised by subject, by class or in a way that makes it easy for you.

Internet is precious - especially here in Zambia! Time is also precious!
Uploading videos to ManageBac or Google Drive is time consuming and internet draining. Here’s how to save both:
Open video in iMovie
Click on the ‘share icon’ and select ‘Save video’.
Select ‘SMALL - 360p’ and your resized video will be added to your photo library ready to upload to Google Drive or ManageBac...

Being polite

Get what YOU want
Gain respect
Clear purpose
When you save your work, be sure to follow the naming convention specific to that class. This makes it MUCH easier for you and your teacher(s) to identify each assignment - and helps you keep organised!
For example, an essay you are saving for MYP Year 3 (grade 8) could follow this convention:
jsmithEng8A_OdysseyEssay.pdf
(First initial / last name / subject & section / title of assignment)
The underscore and spacing are up to you, just be consistent.
