GOA courses are regular classes and cannot be taken in addition to a full load at AISL. Students should expect to work five to seven hours per week in these classes.
Students who take courses from GOA will receive AISL credit, and the grade will be calculated into the student’s GPA.
AISL pays the tuition costs of the GOA course for the student.
GOA courses run on roughly the same semester schedule as AISL courses.
GOA courses will show on the transcript as “GOA: name of course.”
GOA courses are electives and do not substitute for a course required for graduation at AISL.
GOA limits registration for each class to two students from a school. AISL students are limited to one GOA course per semester.
Juniors and seniors are eligible to enroll in GOA classes. Freshmen & Sophomores need the permission of the High School Principal.
All GOA courses count only towards AISL elective credits.
Summer GOA courses are available with the approval of the High School principal. In this case, the family pays the cost of the tuition. Summer courses can be used for AISL credit.
The mission of Global Online Academy is to replicate in online classrooms the intellectually rigorous programs and excellent teaching that are hallmarks of its member schools; to foster new and effective ways, through best practices in online education, for students to learn; and to promote students’ global awareness and understanding by creating truly diverse, worldwide, online schoolroom communities. Read more about their program here: http://www.globalonlineacademy.org/student-program/
There are currently 70 schools from all over the world in the GOA consortium. Those schools include The American School in Japan; The Blake School in Minneapolis; International School of Beijing in China; The Dalton School in New York; Jakarta International School in Indonesia; King’s Academy in Jordan; The Westminster Schools in Atlanta; Lakeside School in Seattle; Latin School of Chicago; Punahou School in Honolulu; and Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C.
Students take GOA courses for credit at AISL. GOA course workload and course intensity is equivalent to courses taken on our campus. Unlike many online courses, students are not passive receptors of pre-recorded lectures from their teachers. Instead, students collaborate on challenging and interesting projects with students from around the world. They are also expected to manage their workload and time effectively to support the asynchronous nature of the courses.
GOA maintains excellence through rigorous teacher training, building on the best practices and values of leading independent schools—and by ensuring classrooms stay at a small size that fosters strong teacher-student relationships and student-to-student collaboration and interaction. With Global Online Academy, teachers and students can share their voice on a global stage, improving learning and enabling the pursuit of individual passions.
