District Services for Gifted/Talented Students
Gifted/Talented services are targeted for those who excel or who have the potential to excel in core courses and/or who exhibit gifted/talented characteristics as accepted by Anahuac ISD.
Students will be identified for general intellectual ability. The district recognizes that students identified as gifted/talented can come from all races, socioeconomic groups, geographical locales, and environments.
State Definition of Gifted/Talented Texas Education Code§29.121
In this sub-chapter, "gifted and talented student" means a child or youth who performs at or show the potential for performing at a remarkably high level of accomplishment when compared to others of the same age, experience, or environment and who:
exhibits high performance capability in an intellectual, creative,
or artistic area;
excels in specific academic field.
Student Identification / Assessment
Referral
A student may be referred for the Gifted and Talented Program by a teacher, counselor, parent, or administrator. Students in grades 6-12 can also refer themselves for the Program. Nominations are accepted in January of each school year.
Assessment
All Kindergarten students are automatically considered for gifted/talented services. Kindergarten students will be screened in the fall of each school year. All Kindergarten students who undergo the full assessment will be identified for the Gifted/Talented program by March 1.
Students in grades 1-12 can be assessed in the spring semester of the school year.
Students from all populations have the opportunity to be tested. Consideration of students with special needs, such as culturally different, the economically disadvantaged, and students with disabilities shall assure their participation in the G/T program. Data collected through both objective and subjective assessments shall be used to determine individual eligibility for the GT program.
