What is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a lifelong condition that makes it difficult for people to read.  Dyslexia is mainly a problem with reading accurately and fluently. Students with dyslexia may have trouble answering questions about something they’ve read. But when it’s read to them, they may have no difficulty at all. 

Dyslexia can create difficulty with other skills. These include:

Students will be referred for an evaluation for the dyslexia program based on common signs of dyslexia. The following may be associated with dyslexia if they are unexpected for the individual’s age, educational level or cognitive abilities:

 Preschool

Grade School

Middle School

High School

The Section 504 Committee determines eligibility based on the dyslecia assessment, then makes the recommendation for the student. Possible recommendations may include:

If the Section 504 committee recommends placement in the dyslexia program, written parent permission is required and will be obtained prior to placement.
