Title of artwork: The Fast Track

Medium: Block print, ink on paper

Artist Statement: The idea of my block print is that there are two trains one is in India and one is somewhere in Europe. The trains show how each country works. In India, there are a lot of people on the train but in Europe only a few. It connects to culture because it shows how people’s transportation is.

Title of artwork: Anne with an E

Medium: graphite and colored pencil on paper

Artist Statement: I took an impressive view of the Anne series on Netflix so I wanted to draw the actress by myself. At first I wanted to draw it in illustration but I changed to portrait painting even though my skills are not enough to draw like a real person. One desired thing is that I could not draw her freckles because I was afraid I’d fail and ruin it.

Title of artwork: LET US BREATHE

Medium: acrylic on canvas

Artist Statement: The reason why I drew this was because I wanted to tell others about how much air is serious and what’s going to happen if we don’t stop them. One of my biggest reasons that I chose this drawing is because this is my second drawing that I have really focused well. I had a challenge when I couldn’t write the words in the same size but I solved that problem by putting a meaning to my challenge.

Title of artwork: Behind The Issue (Industrialized Cities Problem)

Medium: recycling/trash, foam board, transparent paper

Artist Statement: My idea was to create a sculpture that is made out of trash which would create a shadow that is looking like an industrialized city. Then we just look at the bunch of trash, it looks like just a bunch of trash. And when we look at the shadow. We could realize that the problem (Waste Management) is caused by industrialized cities problem.

Title of artwork Black Lives Matter

Medium: block print on paper

Artist Statement: Although many (non-black) people claim to know and understand the topic of racism towards African Americans, nothing is said or done by them to bring change. That's how i thought about the phrase “you're hearing but not listening” because people all throughout America are hearing the voices of African Americans but not actually listening to the specific problems (systematic racism, economic inequality, and mass incarceration) that the black community is going through. And with this artwork i want people to realize that it goes past black people just “being treated badly”.

Title of artwork: Still Life

Medium: graphite on paper

Artist Statement: While considering what to draw, I wanted my artwork to have a connection with most of us in AISC as we spent a few weeks apart. And I thought that food and fruits were something that all of us needed especially recently during the quarantine. And the reason why I chose to draw pear was that our school, AISC looked upside-down of the pear.

Title of artwork: Bullock Cart

Medium: Block print, ink on paper

Artist Statement: In my artwork, there is a bullock cart which is seen very commonly in India. The cart is pulled by bulls or cows. Initially, I started off by wondering which country I should focus on: India or America because I am from those two places. After choosing the culture of India, I wanted to print something that I could relate with well and something that connected to me. In my opinion, the bullock cart represents this as many people who can not afford cars and even motorbikes use this transportation as it is cheap and does not use any petrol or gas. I have ridden a bullock cart many times and the experience is fun and very relaxing. A goal I had for this project was for it to relate to me and it definitely did.

Title of artwork: A Starlit Night

Medium: Block print, ink on paper

Artist Statement: My artwork is simple, and yet, it has a lot of meaning to it. It’s simple in the way it looks. It ‘s a girl standing in the wind looking up at the stars which include one shooting star. The meaning behind it though is much more complex. It resembles a girl looking at the shooting star and making a wish because her belief is that when you wish upon a shooting star, that wish will come true. She stands there, wishing upon a star even though the wind is trying to move her. The wind represents other beliefs and how she stands up for what she believes.

Title of artwork: Block Print Bottles

Medium: Block print, ink on paper

Artist Statement: I have created an artwork that has a unique aspect where there can be something hidden in plain sight, for example this is in all of them except one, there is my name imprinted in bottles. The big idea of this artwork is that things can have hidden meanings and messages, it happens all across the world. The goal is to have a hidden background which normally would not be “face front”

Title of artwork: Culture of Sunlight

Medium: Block print, ink on paper

Artist Statement: This artwork signifies a very common practice in religion in India where religious people pray to the sun god Surya, to maintain as well as gain prosperity. It is a belief in Hinduism that the sun is a source of energy, radiance, and brilliance that we pray for. The artwork shows a print of a pair of hands clasped together in an adequate praying position for Hindus. The lines that move outward and upward towards the sun from the hand signify rays that express the connection of you to the sun’s energy. The process to create this print started with a few ideas I drew out as thumbnail sketches. However, from three thumbnail sketches, this really stood out to me, so I decided to create a final sketch of the image with more details including the rays from the hands and the sun, and which parts I wanted to stand out more than others. Overall, I used a lot of texture in my carving and my design while deciding my use of space in the design, and the overall result of the print has a really clear message and is very creative.

Title of artwork: The Heart of Culture

Medium: Block print, ink on paper

Artist Statement: My artwork expresses the idea that culture stems from our hearts, thus the roots and tree growing from the heart. In this artwork, I used the element of line and space as I had to consider both positive and negative space and how my artwork as a whole would comprise lines. While I had many obstacles such as lining up the block and finding the right colors, I also had successes; I was able to carve my block fairly quickly, which left me with more time to make prints and experiment with colors. Overall, the process of creating my artwork has been quite enjoyable and educational as I experimented with a new medium of creating artworks and it expanded my learning.

Title of artwork: COVID-19 V.S. The Yellow Guy

Medium: Digital stop-motion animation

Artist Statement: The video I made. Nearly everything here is made by me. Even the music! And there are tiny affects of buildings, the ceiling and the floor breaking. The best work I did in my whole life until 2020. To make this there were few challenges. There were some delicate changes that should have been made to make it realistic. This was also hard because sometimes I messed it up and the order kept messing up. The movements also were hard to be smooth. I think that by replaying it a ton of times helped me to look for unfamiliar problems.

Title of artwork: Garbish

Medium: wire, OMF film, paper, marker, trash

Artist Statement: My artwork is the fish made of a lot of trash thrown in lakes and rivers. First, I made the basic structure of the model with wires, and then, attached a sheet of OMF film. After that, I put some garbage in the model and sealed it. And with this artwork, I wanted to give a warning message that many lives underwater are getting damaged because of water pollution and people should care about it more.

Kavya

Title of artwork: Dancing Colours

Medium: Block print, ink on paper

Artist Statement: I based this off of the Indian dance of Bharatanatyam which I used to practice and it was more personal than the Taj Mahal, which was my second choice for design. I think the use of texture can be manipulated into making a beautiful 2D design. I think this can be used to make excellent patterns when being printed repeatedly with or without the same colours. I think we could use the different points of negative space to our advantage using it to direct more attention towards the colourful outfit. I didn’t get the two designs to match perfectly but I think it and the lines from the block adds a little bit of a messy effect, which I like.

I feel happy with my final prints, I like my colour scheme and I think it’s very fitting and I think the blue and purple one calls the viewers attention and then they look at the warm coloured ones because of the high contrast between those colours.

Title of artwork: Lunchtime-Taichung

Medium: graphite, charcoal, and pen on paper

Artist Statement: This artwork was made on the 4 of May 2020 for Art’s Virtual class. It was a late breakfast I once ate in Taiwan. It shows a breakfast with milkshakes on it. It has value, form and shadows as it allows the viewers eyes to get dispersed along the artwork. I have decided to make my artwork monochrome as it would have been too much to the eye.

Title of artwork: The miniature macrame

Medium: Embroidery thread and a wooden dowel

Artist Statement: My artwork represents a macrame pattern since we use knots and string. I chose this artwork because it is the one that I did during VLD that I most enjoyed. i used different colored string and a wooden dowel. I really like this artwork because you can demonstrate a lot of different patterns and color.

Sungmin

Title of artwork: Compass

Medium: pencil and colored pencil on paper

Artist Statement: I chose to draw a compass because I wanted to practice emphasizing reality on my artwork. I began with sketching the compass and then later colored with color pencils. I struggled with describing the metal surface of the compass.

Title of artwork: One drop of water saved is life saved

Medium: acrylic on canvas

Artist Statement: The ideas behind this artwork is that I am very concerned that in India a lot of people can’t have water when they want to. With this artwork I want to show that we can save the world with just a little act. “A drop of water saved is a Life saved”

Title of artwork: Statue of Liberty

Title of artwork: Deteriorating Ocean

Medium: Quilling, paper, watercolor

Artist Statement: My artwork is a representation of what happens when chemicals are released into the ocean. Specifically, the chemicals in household/washing detergents. Through STEAM, I have learnt several horrifying things about these chemicals and wanted to be able to create a depiction of that. All of the animals towards the detergent are created in dark colours as seen. That is to represent how they suffer and die when in contact with the chemicals. On the other hand, all of the bright coloured and cute sea creatures closeby are seen to soon suffer the same fate. The medium I used was paper cut into thin strips and then swirled into different shapes using a special quilling tool. A challenge for me was time since a lot of quilling is about trial and error, creating something and if it doesn't work, fixing it. One thing I learnt about the process was being patient, furthermore learning about how to place things to create the most impact. To expand, clumping things together to create a natural look.

Grace

Title of artwork: Grace's Journal

Medium: acrylic on canvas journal cover

Artist Statement: My journal cover was based on the things that make up me. I wanted to focus on familiarity and the feeling of home while brainstorming. This led me to choose a scene depicting a sunset from a lighthouse, bees and flowers. I lived in South Africa for three years and I lived by the beach, visits to the lighthouse were common and helped convey the sense of home. Bees and flowers remind me of my home in England which is near to many forests.

Title of artwork: Fruits

Medium: watercolor on paper

Artist Statement: I draw this by getting some fruits and other things that I could draw. There is an apple and pomegranate and flowers. I do not remember the fruit behind the apple. But it was easiest thing to colour.

Ritika

Title of artwork:

Medium: Block print, ink on paper

Artist Statement: I chose to do this because I thought it was interesting. When I was carving this out I realized that it was slightly harder to cut out the smaller lines but I overcame this challenge by using a smaller carving tool. I tried to take as much of the lines out next to the tower but I realised that they looked cool so I let some of the lines stay.

Shyam

Title of artwork: My first original character

Medium: Strathmore Bristol smooth surface paper, Migma micron outlining pens, mechanical pencil.

Artist Statement: For this drawing, I was able to show my passion for Manga and anime. I have always loved manga and anime because of its features, such as the ways the eyes and the hair looks. For me, its just very VERY satisfying when I draw them. Not just that, but I was also able to investigate the style since I have been watching anime for a year now. The materials I used was a special paper for inking, a pencil, and outlining pens of several different sizes. There were many challenges throughout this project, but the main one was that my hand was very shaky during the inking, so it was very hard to have control. Another challenge was that it was very hard to get the body proportions. it took me at least five full sketches to get all of the proportions right. However, I did have a great time drawing and inking this, and I this it is one of my best pieces.

Title of artwork: The culture of Korean Peninsula

Medium: Block print, ink on paper

Artist Statement: My artwork is basically about the traditions of Korea, which was the language and the national animal, which is the tiger. I planned to paint it to look like a real tiger, however, I thought it would be better to try different colors, which came out better than expected.

Firstly, I sketched 2 thumbnail sketches of this topic(small and big) and there was only a tiger on my very first sketch, but I thought it would be meaningful to have more things about tradition. As a result, I sketched the Korean alphabet in the background. Then, I started to follow through lines with a sharpener, so that it makes it easy to see and not be confused. Afterwards, I started to carve my block carefully in order to not mess it up by a simple mistake. Finally, I started to color, with color that best matches the color of a real tiger, however, I thought it would be more interesting to paint with a variety of colors, so I tried with different colors that match the Korean flag and came out really good.

My goal for this artwork was to show the traditions of Korea with fewer things and I think it's more stuff than I expected to have. I tried to be more simple and describe the traditional things of Korea. Overall, my work came out amazing with my classmate’s recommendations.

Title of artwork:

Medium: Block print, ink on paper

Artist Statement: I’m the beginning of thinking of my block printing design, I originally wanted to do something related to the myths in my culture, but as I was thinking about it, I realized that my design might have been simple and I didn’t think it represented my culture the way I wanted it to, so I went with my second (and current) design. After figuring that out, I also was unsure of what colors to use. I had wanted to use brown and gold but then realized that the brown didn’t go well with the gold after a test print, and I also noticed that there was a lot of brown and little gold so it made my printing look weird. I did multiple prints (with different colors) before choosing the black and gold as my final colors. After that, I made three final prints using black and gold.

Title of artwork:

Medium: Watercolor on paper

Artist Statement: My artwork is a mix between a city and a forest landscape. I painted it to represent how cities can coexist with nature without having to harm it. I was nervous at first because I hadn’t used watercolour in so long so it was a lot of learning. Even though it didn't come out looking very good, I am very proud of this artwork just because I tried something new, and learned so much. I learnt with this that sometimes even if the final product wasn't the best, the process can be so valuable.

Title of artwork: Henry VIII’s wives were too good for him

Medium: pencil on paper

Artist Statement: The ideas behind the piece that I chose were that I dislike Henry VIII and his wives were too good for him. That is why I chose to represent this clear and extremely complex idea in a piece that displays his wives in a better light than him. I did want to go over it in Micron marker to really emphasize the words like ‘obesity’ when referring to Henry, but I messed up with the Micron. That is how I arrived at this as my chosen piece.

DoYeon

Title of artwork: Yut-nori

Medium: Block print, ink on paper

Artist Statement: My design represents a Korean cultural game called Yutnori. Nowadays, it is not played that often but long ago, it was played during special holidays like New Year's Day or Thanksgiving when families gather all together. This game has a playing board and the sticks which are similar to dice as you can see in my drawing. Although I faced many challenges along the way, it turned out pretty well overall, and I balanced the positive and negative space well.

Medium: pencil on paper

Artist Statement: I wrote this in the start of the corona shut down and I felt lonely and bored in the house. However, during the corona shut down I was also able to make lot of time of myself. So this Artwork is from two kinds of feelings.

The hardest part of this artwork was the shape of the boy sitting in the middle. In my artwork, I wanted to make dark so that I can show it’s like in the space and the boy in the middle has little bit of negative feelings.
