Research on Educational Competitive Robotics

Introduction:

This is a research study, designed to test and create new ideas that other people can use. The purpose of this investigation is to study the effects of high school students’ participation in VEX robotics competitions on their attitudes towards STEM and 21^stcentury skills as well as their STEM career interests.
There is a current general belief that in order to succeed in the future workforce, a focus on STEM subject areas is important in a student’s education. There are many in-school and after- school programs that focus on increasing students’ exposure to and experience in STEM subjects. This study looks into a specific program — VEX Robotics — and how participation in VEX Robotics competitions affect students’ attitudes towards STEM. This research posits that students’ self-efficacy and participation in VEX Robotics competitions may positively influence their attitudes towards STEM. Since the VEX Robotics program continues to grow across schools in various countries, the researcher is exploring the benefits and effects of participation in the STEM-based activity. Results may hopefully be used by schools exploring avenues of expanding their STEM focus for enriching student learning.

To complete the study, data on students' attitudes needs to be collected and this can be done through a validated online survey instrument.

You are a High School student (Grades 9 to 12 in the American curriculum system or equivalent level in other systems, such as British [Year 10 to 13] and Hong Kong [Form 3 to 6]).
You are a member of your school's VEX Robotics EDR Team (VRC).
You participated in at least one VEX Robotics EDR Competition (VRC) in the 2016-2017 season and/or at least one competition in the 2017-2018 season.
You are willing to participate in the study.
You can obtain permission/consent from your parents to participate in the study (if you are between 13 and 17 years old).
You can provide your own consent to participate in the study on your own (if you are 18 years old and above).

Your school has a VEX Robotics EDR Team (VRC), but YOU are NOT a member of the robotics team.
You are willing to participate in the study.
You can obtain permission/consent from your parents to participate in the study (if you are between 13 and 17 years old).
You can provide your own consent to participate in the study on your own (if you are 18 years old and above).

*Participants in the survey can only complete the survey once and declare as either being part of Group A or Group B.
