Queen Alexandra Elementary

In this residency we explored our connection to nature as we created characters, designs and animations using nature as muse, guide and material.

We began by creating organic water and ink paintings with brushes straws and paint pens to let natural experimental processes combined with more controlled techniques take us to unexpected and new places in our imaginations and our artwork. We them used gathered sticks, roots, shells and other natural elements; with wire and paper for the older students, and clay for the younger student, to create sculptural creatures and forms. Older students created puppets that they used for animation while younger students created stand alone sculptures. Using kinetic sand, shells, clay and twigs, we explored the movement potential of different materials and brought nature to life through stop-motion animation. Older students explored underlit sand and paint on glass animation to explore movement in nature. As a school children collaborated on a paper mache sculptural surface to project their animations onto and on a hollow glowing tree to hang their sculptures from.
