ELIGIBILITY

Female postgraduate students (Masters’ and PhD’s) registered for mathematical sciences programmes at UWC are eligible to apply. Only participants who have completed the application form to confirm their participation and have received formal notification that their applications have been accepted will be allowed to take part in the workshop.


REGISTRATION & COST

Registration is free of charge for this workshop, but space is limited!! We will allocate space on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that the recruitment process is highly competitive and only 35 successful participants will be selected based on high-quality written submissions to the questionnaire below.

 


WAFIRA WORKSHOP at UWC

Call for Applications

AIMS South Africa in collaboration with African Gong will conduct a two-day Women’s Advancement Forum: International Exchanges, Research & Academia (WAFIRA) capacity-building workshop.  It will take place in person from 29-30 March 2023 at UWC, Faculty of Arts & Humanities, Lecture Rooms 1 & 2 (New Arts Building). The workshop is intended to benefit 35 postgraduate students registered for mathematical sciences programmes (mathematics, physics, computer science and statistics) at UWC.


WAFIRA PROGRAMME CONCEPT & DELIVERY

WAFIRA is a capacity-building programme concept that is uniquely centred on the contexts, realities, challenges, opportunities and strengths across the landscape of African Women’s indigeneity – ‘Made in Africa’, by African women, for African women, and delivered by African women. WAFIRA is conceptualised to foreground and empower African Women as leaders and agents for the advancement of their study and career progressions across Academia, Research and Industry.


The WAFIRA workshop will be facilitated by dynamic female experts and practitioners, researchers and academics. It has been conceptualised to be intensive, hands-on and minds-on, informative, engaging, transformative and highly interactive. It will cover the following themes and more: Intrinsic and Extrinsic enablers, Success Strategies and enhanced skills-sets for the advancement of Women’s research and career progression. These include Transformative Institutional Frameworks and Socio-cultural Contexts; Science Communication, Knowledge and Skills for Research and Career advancement; International Exchanges for Advanced Study and Research; Presentation and Communication Skills (both oral and written), Successful Mentoring Strategies; Work-life balance, time management and Career Progression.
