Welcome to the website of the European Union Sector Delegations.
For more than fifty-five years, the EU-AIIC Agreement has shaped the professional framework under which freelance interpreters work for the European Union Institutions. The Agreement, the benefits it provides and the collective effort that has sustained it over the decades are familiar to some colleagues, but less so to others. Until now, there has never been a single place bringing together the history, resources, reference documents and practical information relating to the Agreement and the work of the EU Sector Delegations.
This website was created to fill that gap.
Here you will find information about the EU-AIIC Agreement, the Delegations that negotiate and defend it, and the many benefits and protections that have been secured through decades of collective action. Through interviews with current and former delegation members, historical documents and explanatory videos, we hope to provide greater insight into how the Agreement came about, how it has evolved over time, and why it remains relevant today.
The site also serves as a repository for important reference texts, past communications from the Delegations, information on current issues affecting the profession, and practical guidance on topics such as insurance and social protection. Additional resources, including a Frequently Asked Questions section, will be developed over time.
Whether you are a newly accredited interpreter or a long-standing member of the EU sector, we hope this website will help you better understand the framework within which we work and the collective effort that underpins it. The EU-AIIC Agreement exists because interpreters organised collectively, and that collective strength depends on participation. By preserving our institutional memory and making it accessible to all, we hope to contribute to an informed, engaged and united professional community.
Joint General Assemby of Interpreters in the European Parliament approves amended working conditions to include new Annex IV on interpreting from the EP's purpose-built hub
On Wednesday, 7 October, staff interpreters and ACIs at the European Parliament voted overwhelmingly in favour of the revised Interpreter Working Conditions (IWoCos), including new provisions on distance interpreting.
The text, which was the result of more than a year of intense negotiations, was submitted to a Joint General Assembly in Strasbourg and received broad support from both groups.
Among staff interpreters, 157 voted in favour and 2 against and. Among ACIs, 240 voted in favour, 4 against and 1 abstained.
The approved text is available in the “Key Documents” section of our website.
Thank you to all freelance interpreters for turning out in such large numbers, as well as to our Booth Correspondents for their valuable contribution to this excellent result! We believe that the high turnout will send a strong message to DG LINC management that freelance interpreters care for good working conditions and are a cohesive voice to be reckoned with.
On 14 July, we held our final joint sectoral and sub-sectoral meeting before the summer break. It was a particularly productive evening, during which colleagues received and discussed important updates from both sub-delegations and the Negotiating Delegation. Among the key topics was the legal advice we recently commissioned on the scope and interpretation of the EU-AIIC Agreement, which will play an important role in shaping our future work. We also elected new members to the EPPD and the Negotiating Delegation, further strengthening our representative bodies.
The evening concluded with drinks and an opportunity to celebrate the new additions to the Delegations and the start of a well-deserved summer break.
A more detailed account of the evening will be shared in our September newsletter, so stay tuned!
A video to learn about our EU-AIIC Agreement
Watch our latest video in which Daniel André, negotiator of the 1999 and 2008 EU-AIIC Agreements, explains the relation between article 90 of the Regulation on Conditions of Employment of Other Servants (CEOS), the EU-AIIC Agreement and the Institutions' accreditation procedure.
Our last Substack communications
In one of our latest newsletters, we provide clarification on the working conditions applied during the recent European Citizens’ Panels pilot, highlighting concerns regarding transparency, booth manning and communication.
We also share an important call for solidarity from our colleagues in Vienna in response to developments affecting agreed working conditions for freelance interpreters within the UN system.

On 27 May, colleagues from across the profession came together for an evening of networking, discussion and friendly competition at Atelier 29.
Organised jointly by the Vega Network, AIIC Belgium and the Negotiating Delegation to the EU Institutions, the event offered a unique opportunity to connect with representatives from different AIIC bodies, exchange views on the profession and test participants’ knowledge in a lively quiz.

On 8 December, the AIIC–EU Delegations hosted an evening dedicated to the EU–AIIC Agreement, its origins, evolution and continued relevance in today’s professional landscape. The programme included a pre-screening of a video featuring former Delegations members sharing their experience, followed by an open discussion with colleagues, the EUND and Delegations representatives, and informal exchanges over drinks.
Thank you to everyone who joined us at KAMEA for this engaging and forward-looking conversation on our profession.
We strongly encourage you to discover the highlights of the evening below and relive the moment through the video screened during the event.
