WELCOME BACK

Welcome back to all our students and parents. I also would like to welcome all new students and their parents. I wish you all an exciting and successful academic year. We are up to a good start in the library. Many students come to the library around lunch times to read, borrow and return books or just to browse the shelves. Keep up the good work, I am so proud of you.

Reading is an important part of everyone’s life. I encourage all students to read as much as you can in lots of different genres and book types to learn more about the world around you. Discuss the books you read with your friends and siblings . This can help you get a better understanding of them, and you’ll be able to recommend some more good books for each other to read. Remember that reading is the key to success!

Students at different levels have been learning this term about the Alphabetical and the Dewey Classification systems, how to locate a book using Dewey numbers and the differences between fiction and non-fiction books. Also the meaning of words such as, “author”, “editor”, “illustrator”, "publisher", “book spine” and many more.

REMINDERS TO PARENTS

Take Home Readers

Dear parent please make sure that your child takes good care of their Take-Home Readers and return them to their classroom in good condition.

Library books

In the library I encourage the children to be organised. Children should take responsibility for putting their library books in their library bags and place the library bags inside their school bags before they go to bed the night before their scheduled library session. By doing that they will avoid overdue books.

Please note: Our library books have stickers with our school name, logo and phone number inside the books. Also the barcodes on the books have our school name. Please ensure that you always check the sticker and the barcode of the book before you return it to us or to the public library.

Dear parents please check when your child has library in the following schedule:

VICTORIAN PREMIER READING CHALLENGE

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and the Australian International Academy Caroline Springs Campus is excited to be participating. The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. The aim of the Challenge is to promote a love of reading. It is not a competition, but a challenge to each student to read more widely a set number of books by 7 September 2018. Students may choose to read from the challenge booklists and/or books from their own choice.

Students from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books. All students who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and can choose to have their name included on the online Honor Roll.

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is not a competition, but a challenge to each student. The Challenge promotes the importance of reading among students in Victorian schools and encourages parents and families to support their children’s reading at all times.

AUTHOR VISIT

I have made a booking with the Australian author Michael Panckridge to visit our school. He has been a music teacher, sports teacher, primary teacher, secondary teacher, Choir and orchestra conductor. Michael was inspired by his passion for sport and desire to get reluctant readers engaged in books. He authored a series of engaging sporty books which are now some of Australia's most popular children's books.

Michael Panckridge will talk about his writing style and also give the students a head start to the Short Story Writing Competition coming up in August. CHARACTER PARADE

As part of the Children’s Book Week 2018 celebration, I organized a character parade on Friday the 19th of October, 2018. Students and staff came to school dressed up in their favourite characters from books and fairy tales. The event started with the teachers and the students performing two children songs. One of them was the Ram Sam Sam song. Ram Sam Sam is a folk song originally from Morocco. The phrase “a Ram Sam Sam” has no real meaning. “Guli” means “tell me” in Moroccan Arabic. “ A rafiq” means “travelling companion”. The purpose of the song is to have fun coordinating actions with singing.

The performance was then followed by reading a fiction story and a book about technology facts. Each class walked on the runway to display their costumes. The students’ and the staff custom looked amazing. I would like to thank the parents and the students for putting such a great effort towards their costumes. I also would like to thank all teachers for their lovely performance and remarkable costumes.
