AHS Swimming Team
Dear Parents and Carers
Another busy week for sport at AHS as you will see below. Thank you to all the staff and students involved and to the parents and carers for their support.
On Tuesday evening, we held our Year 12 Early Applicants Evening, which gave students and their parents information about the courses that you have to apply for early on in the academic year. Thank you to all who attended, it was delightful to see you, and also to all staff who facilitated the event, particularly the Sixth Form Team.
On Wednesday, approximately 60 Year 13 Psychology students went to the Tutor2u Conference in Westfield White City and on the same day approximately 28 Geography students went for a study day at the Royal Geography Society. Thank you to all the staff and students involved in both trips
Also on Wednesday evening, we held the first of our two Year 11 Parent Consultation Evenings, this time on line, but we look forward to meeting our Year 11 parents in person later in the year. Thank you again to all staff involved.
Tomorrow, some of our Y12 students will be taking part in the Model United Nations Conference at Sir William Borlase School in Marlow. We hope they have a really super day and we thank the staff and students involved and the parents and carers for their support.

With the weather changing and flu season upon us, please can I remind parents and carers that all student absences must be reported through the absence line, so that we know your child is away from School. The telephone number is: Pupil absence line: 01296 388230.
If your child has vomiting or diarrhoea, please remember they must be off school for 48hours from the last incident. If they are sent home from school, they must not return until 48 hours from the last bout of vomiting/diarrhoea.

We ran a Chemistry Escape room last week in celebration of Chemistry week. Thanks to the Chemistry Ambassadors for organising and running this competition. It was great fun, lots of students participated and a lot of Chemistry was learnt in the process.

We had a highly entertaining visit from particle physicist and science educator, Dr Sam Gregson, on Wednesday lunchtime this week. Sam used some amusing interactive methods to explain how particles are accelerated, collided and then selected and analysed in particle accelerators such as the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Everyone who wanted to was able to participate using QR codes, lightning fast reactions and the ability to guide particles into filters using squats, yes squats. He also explained how we have to be so careful with our conscious bias, as part of the scientific process.
His visit was perfectly timed as the Year 13 physicists are heading off to CERN and Geneva next week with Mrs Nicholls and me, where we will hopefully be able to see some of this in real life.
More STEM talks lined up next term, including a biophysicist and a returning professor of anatomy, not forgetting an astronaut in March!

Head of Physics
Huge thanks to our lovely AHSA PTA parent volunteers & teachers for organising and running the bar at our recent House Dance event and for the disco evening on Friday. The disco is a really important social event in our calendar bringing together our new Year 7 pupils from AHS & AGS, helping them to cement friendships and make new ones and engendering a general sense of belonging within our school communities. It was a fun evening and a fantastic fundraiser for our school. Well done all.
