Frequently asked questions regarding
music at Springbrook:
Q: How can my child participate in Orchestra, Choir or Band?
A: Music classes are one of the elective options at Springbrook. To join simply sign up for one of the music classes as an elective.
Q: Are students required to attend concerts?
A: Band, orchestra and choir all give concerts outside the school day. These are student assessments and are graded events. Dates for these concerts will be sent home with students in September.
Q: Do middle school students attend festivals?
A: Yes. In choir students will attend choral festival in March in grades 6,7, &8. In orchestra and band students attend district festival in grades 7&8.
Q: How much does it cost to rent an instrument?
A: Cost of instruments depends on which type of instrument is chosen. Because of the COVID situation the music companies are not able to provide us with flyers or final pricing right now.
Q: What if I cannot afford an instrument?
A: PLEASE talk directly with a music teacher if affording an instrument is a problem. If a student wishes to play an instrument, we will do our best to make it happen.
Q: Are students required to practice?
A: Practicing is part of a music student’s homework. Students need to practice to maintain and improve skills learned in music class.
Q: What do students wear to concerts?
A: Each music class has a slightly different dress requirement for concerts. Information regarding concert uniform will be sent home in September.
Q: Which instruments are band/orchestra instruments?
A: In 6th grade orchestra students can choose to play violin, viola or cello.
In 6th grade band students can choose to play clarinet, trumpet, trombone, baritone and flute. If students desire to play a band instrument not listed they will have the opportunity to apply for a change of instrument later in the 6th grade year.
Q: What if I already have an instrument?
A: Contact a music teacher to have the instrument evaluated; sometimes instruments need to have a little work if they haven’t been used in a while. Note: If your child chooses to participate in orchestra, the violin/viola/cello all come in different sizes. Miss Wittenkeller will need to measure orchestra students for the correct size before you obtain an instrument.
