Good Face to Face Presentation
Good Online Presentation
Warm interaction between presenter and the group is critical. We all have had hundreds of group interactions that have taught us the verbal and non verbal skills to acknowledge others. Presenters and group members vary a lot in these skills. Confident presenter use good eye contact with individuals, use facial gestures, clear voince etc.
Online needs attention old skills and some new ones.
New or varied skills: online can be a 'cold' environment to begin, but interaction can be better than face to face - everyone is on the same level, no one is at the back!
greet and acknowledging everyone as they join (unless a very big group.)
a wall of faces staring at each other needs interactions to make it welcoming.
often important to help some individuals set up their computer and lighting better - put a laptop on some books to elevate the camera? rotate to get more light on one's face and to avoid a window being behind
ensure each name is on the screen (an advantage of online)
Invite people to join in 5 min at least before the start time and have a chat before the session. New environment needs new skills!
there are varying views of Muting sound when not talking: the problem is that Mute on conversation is quite stilted and people continually forget to unMute when time to talk - ruining the flow. An alternative is to have rules (depending on how many attending). Hand-up and good chairing of discussion can works well.
Ensuring everyone is comfortable, seating, view of a screen, etc.
Some aren't aware of how they look: worth attending to.
lighting on face: no window behind,
elevate a laptop or iPad on books to avoid 'looking down nose'
If presenting with a screen check that you aren't blocking the screen, everyone can hear etc.
Check that individals are confident with the tools: sound is on, camera is on, maybe use of Chat, etc.
