Lack of International Accreditation
ADDU faces challenges in achieving international accreditation for its academic programs, which is essential for enhancing global competitiveness and mobility for graduates. Achieving international accreditation requires significant investment in quality assurance processes, curriculum alignment, and administrative capacity.
The university operates in silos with minimal integration across academic, research, and community engagement functions. This segmented approach limits the potential for collaborative initiatives that could enhance educational outcomes and community impact. A more integrated strategy that aligns academic, research, and community goals would foster a more cohesive institutional culture and promote greater synergies between different departments and units.
There is a growing need for improved digital literacy and technological skills among faculty, staff, and students, especially with the rapid evolution of educational technologies and methodologies. Additionally, the university’s HISFlex classrooms, designed to enhance digital pedagogy, are currently underutilized due to a lack of proficiency in using these advanced tools. The university should prioritize professional development in digital skills to ensure its community is well-equipped to leverage technology effectively in teaching, learning, and research. This includes comprehensive training in digital tools, data management, online learning platforms, the use of HISFlex classrooms, and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence.
Engaging all university stakeholders—students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners—is critical for the success of strategic initiatives and for fostering a sense of belonging and commitment to the university’s mission. Developing more inclusive and participatory decision-making processes and enhancing communication with stakeholders can help build stronger relationships and support for university programs and policies.
The university needs to strengthen its commitment to environmental sustainability, including implementing eco-friendly practices and integrating sustainability into the curriculum and campus operations. Establishing more robust policies and practices for energy conservation, waste management, and sustainable resource use will not only reduce the university’s environmental footprint but also align with its mission to promote social justice and stewardship of creation.
Ateneo de Davao University Community Gathers for the Institutional Convocation and Strategic Conversations for Fortiores 2030
The Ateneo de Davao University convened its first Institutional Convocation and Strategic Conversations on 22 August 2024 at the Martin Hall, Jacinto Campus. This gathering provided an opportunity to reflect and build on discussions from the faculty convocations, assess the institution's current state, reflect on contemporary challenges and responses, and propose directions for the upcoming academic year.
The assembly began with a call to order and a welcome message from the Executive Vice President, Mr. Jeremy S. Eliab. Attendees included administrators, faculty members, and staff from the Basic Education Unit, Higher Education Unit, Formation Cluster, Research Centers and Institutes, Engagement and Advocacy Centers, and Central Administration.
University President Fr. Karel S. San Juan, SJ, delivered an insightful address highlighting the University’s achievements from the past year and the vision for the new academic year. Fr. San Juan’s remarks set a contemplative tone for the group strategic conversations that followed.
An intermission then featured a performance by the non-teaching personnel. Following the intermission, Dr. Epifania Melba L. Manapol, Director of the Office of Strategic Management and Quality Assurance, outlined the roadmap for the afternoon’s discussions.
After lunch, full-time employees from offices, centers, departments, councils, and clusters reconvened in assigned rooms for the strategic conversations. The small group discussions involved reflecting and analyzing the University’s vision for the next five years, focusing on both external and internal challenges, including opportunities and threats, and strategizing on how to leverage the University’s strengths to support its mission. Each group has a facilitator to guide their discussions and a documenter to summarize key points. These conversations are part of Phase 3 of the University Strategic Planning Process 2025-2030 and will continue for a second round until November.
The Institutional Convocation and Strategic Conversations is a critical event for the Ateneo community to reflect on its shared mission and engage in thoughtful discussions about its future. Aligning with the guiding principles of complexity, conversation, and contemplation is the formulation of the University Strategic Plan, Fortiores 2030.
