Advocacy

One of the purposes of PTSA is to secure adequate laws for children and youth. This means law making at all levels, including ballot measures. It is PTSA’s responsibility to disseminate as much factual, objective information as possible during election campaigns to help the community make informed choices. 

Newly Adopted National PTA Resolutions and associated bills

CALIFORNIA

At the 2023 California PTA Convention, resolutions on suggested tools and strategies to support students in the areas of literacy, synthetic and non-tobacco-sourced nicotine use, and access to the general education curriculum for all students were adopted by the delegates (including Adams PTSA board members!). 

SB 793, the bill to outlaw the sale of flavored tobacco was signed into law by the Governor on August 28th. This bill was supported by the California PTA.

 

NATIONAL

During the 2023 National PTA Virtual Convention, delegates adopted resolutions on Hazing, Protection of and Support for LGBTQ+ Individuals, Safe Storage of Firearms and Seizure Safe Schools. The resolutions are available at PTA.org/Resolutions. PTA leaders and members at all levels are encouraged to use the resolutions to build partnerships, form coalitions, increase awareness, develop programs and advocate with policymakers on these issues. Adams PTSA board members attended and voted at this convention.
