What is High School Wrestling?
It is a Grappling based Martial Art turned Sport.
The sport is a competitive game in which competitors fight to pin their opponent’s back firmly on the playing surface–a padded mat.
There is no striking, choking, or joint manipulation (no punching/kicking/submissions).
It is played by many and is able to be played by anyBODY.
There are three main types of sport Wrestling: Folkstyle, Freestyle, and Greco-Roman.
Folkstyle is the sport practiced in High School for both girls and boys.
Freestyle is the sport practiced in College Girls Wrestling.
Freestyle and Greco-Roman are the only types of wrestling practiced in the Olympics.
All styles of wrestling use points to determine a winner unless a PIN is achieved during a match.
If a pin is achieved, the match ends immediately with the pinner awarded the win.
This is the toughest sport you can play in High School. Here’s why:
It is the only combative sport in High School (1v1 fight sport).
When you compete, there is no one else on the mat with you, so you better be ready to fight (your opponent sure will be).

Academics - Eligibility Requirements
You are a student-athlete – grades come first
Grades are released every Thursday.
If an athlete has two or more F’s, they will be ineligible for the following week.
If a wrestler ends the first semester with two or more F’s, they will be ineligible for 6 Weeks
If the student did not attend school that day, the athlete is unable to participate in Practice or Competition that day.
Wrestling Attendance
In order to compete, you must be at practice.
Unexcused absences are not acceptable and athletes (or parent-guardians) that do not notify Coach Lamb of an absence via email or text will not be able to participate in that week’s competition.
Most absences are known ahead of time. Please schedule them accordingly.
1+ week of notification is preferred.
Day-of notifications should be reserved for last minute emergencies and unavoidable circumstances (like being sick).
Tardiness
DON’T BE LATE!
Being late affects everyone.
Practice times listed on the schedule means you are in the room, shoes tied and ready to go at that listed time.
Unexpected circumstances happen, but if tardiness becomes an issue, corrective action will be handled as a team or between coaches and the individual.
Tardiness for Dual Meets and Tournaments are inexcusable 98% of the time.
If you miss weigh-ins... you will NOT be able to wrestle at that competition.
“Making the Team” - Wrestle-Offs
Legacy Girls Wrestling is a non-cut sport.
If you show up to practice (and practice) you are on the team.
Legacy Girls Wrestling has a Varsity, J.V., and an “Extras” team for competition.
The best wrestler earns their spot at each level respectively by wrestling-off anyone else who may be in their weight class.
Wrestle-offs will be held every week as necessary.
Wrestlers will not be able to wrestle-off if they are ineligible for any reason (academic, unexcused absence, or limited practice participation).
Wrestle-offs are not required. Only athletes who want to compete may be required to wrestle-off.
Weight Classes & Weight Management
There are 14 weight classes for Girls Wrestling. They are as follows:
100-105-110-115-120-125-130-135-140-145-155-170-190-235
If this is your first year wrestling, DO NOT concentrate your energy on weight management, instead, concentrate on learning the techniques to become a competent wrestler First!
Your weight has NOTHING to do with being a wrestler!!!
Per NFHS and CHSAA, every wrestler is required to get “Weight Certified” by the school’s trainer and/or doctor in order to compete.
Weight certification clarifies the wrestler’s lowest possible weight class able to compete at for the specific season, as well as gives each wrestler a weight descent plan to best achieve healthy weight loss if desired.
Weight-cutting is NOT MANDATORY and is STRONGLY DISCOURAGED.
If a wrestler does wish to drop weight class(es), the wrestler must talk with a coach first.
Please talk with a coach to request your weight descent plan and to discuss the weight management plan that will best fit your training commitment and competition goals.
Uniform
Competition Singlets, Headgear, and Team Warm-ups are provided by the school to competing athletes.
Undergarments for competition:
All contestants shall wear a suitable undergarment that completely covers the buttocks and the groin area.
Female contestants must also wear a suitable undergarment that covers their breasts.
Per NFHS and CHSAA rules, a high-neck sports bra or short-sleeve compression shirt is required to be worn by female athletes under the singlet at competition events.
Visit the EQUIPMENT AND UNIFORM PAGE for more information.
Hygiene
STAY CLEAN!!!
YESSSS! This is the most important part of wrestling. Stop the spread of skin funk!
Staph infection, ring room, and impetigo can instantly shut down your ability to compete, and serious infections, like Staph, can send you to the hospital.
Wrestlers are required to trim their nails before every practice and competition.
Wrestlers are required to shower after every practice.
Do not go home and complete homework or talk with family/friends.
Jump in the shower immediately!!!
Wrestlers are required to maintain clean practice and competition gear.
When you get back from practice/duals/tournaments, your gear should go right in the laundry basket.
Do NOT wear the same outfit twice in a row without proper washing.
Wrestlers are also required to remove all Jewelry before practice and competition.
Jewelry can cause damage to yourself and/or the person you are wrestling.
Jewelry should be stored in your bag/locker or it should be covered with athletic tape (like a nose ring or new piercing).
Wrestling is rough – you don’t want a piece of sentimental jewelry to break or get damaged while training.
Athletic Lettering
An athlete must earn 36 Varsity Team Points to Letter.
Win by Decision = 3 points
Win by Major Decision = 4 points
Win by Techfall = 5 points
Win by Pin = 6 points
OR the athlete places at a Varsity Tournament meeting the following criteria:
You must have (5) or more Girls in your bracket.
You must place 1st or 2nd in a round robin style bracket.
AND you must wrestle and win (2) or more matches in the tournament.
Byes and/or Forfeits do not count.
Fundraising
See the Fundraising Page to donate now.
The fundraising goal for the 2023-24 Season is for the purchase of new Wrestling Mats for the practice room.
It will be the responsibility of every wrestler to reach out to at least 10 appropriate Family members, Friends, or Acquaintances this season to meet our goal.
More information will be released in the early weeks of the Season.
Managers
Legacy Girls Wrestling is currently looking for Managers for the season. Please refer any friends to Coach Lamb if they are interested.
Managers are crucial to the success of the wrestling program and learn skills applicable to any future job.
Managing a high school athletic team is a great bullet point to put on any resume.
