The Horizon High School Orchestra Program is more than just a class — it’s a community. Students build friendships, improve their musicianship, perform exciting music, travel, and create lifelong memories while being part of a supportive ensemble.
Not at all! We have multiple orchestra levels designed for different experience levels and goals. Whether you are continuing from middle school or looking to grow as a musician, there is a place for you in the program.
Horizon offers three orchestras:
Concert Orchestra – Open enrollment; a great place to continue playing and build skills.
Symphonic Orchestra – Auditioned ensemble for intermediate to advanced players.
Chamber Orchestra – Our top auditioned ensemble focused on advanced literature and high-level performance opportunities.
Absolutely! Many orchestra students are involved in athletics, AP classes, clubs, theater, student leadership, Bollman/Future Forward, and other activities. Most orchestra commitments happen during the school day, making it easy to stay involved in multiple things. Orchestra classes are not always the same hour every year, and we work with the counseling department to ensure there are as little conflicts as possible.
Orchestras perform several concerts throughout the year, participate in festivals, collaborate with choirs and bands, and occasionally perform with guest clinicians or combined ensembles.
Yes! Horizon music students have had opportunities to travel locally and nationally, including festivals, workshops, and major trips to places like Disney, Boston, New York, and even international destinations.
That’s okay! Orchestra is a great place to get back into music. We’ll help you rebuild confidence and skills. Summer lessons and extra help are always encouraged and available.
Not at all. Most orchestra students do not plan to major in music. Orchestra teaches teamwork, discipline, creativity, leadership, and confidence — skills that help in any career path.
Most of the work involves practicing your instrument and preparing for performances. Practice expectations vary by ensemble level, but consistent effort is the key to success.
Yes. Concerts and performances are considered part of the curriculum and are required for the class grade because they function as our “tests” and showcase what students have learned.
Many students rent instruments through local music stores, and some school-owned instruments may be available depending on need and inventory.
Students typically begin in middle school, but if you are interested in learning, talk with the orchestra director. We’re happy to help find the best pathway for you.
The Horizon Orchestra program focuses on strong fundamentals, musical excellence, leadership, and community. Students are challenged to grow while also having fun and creating meaningful experiences together. The program has earned Superior and Excellent festival ratings and has performed at the Colorado ASTA State Orchestra Festival.
