JH Choir Syllabus
Course Title: JH Choir
Grade Level: 7/8
Teacher: Tanya Kemper, Dorinda Blotsky
Textbook: Selected choral music, sight-singing websites, apps and software, composition websites, apps, and software, theory sheets.
Course Description: JH Choir is a subject that meets every day. The students will study, perform, and be exposed to many different styles of choral music. They will learn to express music appropriately for their developmental level and study vocal technique, theory, sight-reading and proper performance technique. Music will be presented for the public at concert two times per year.
Required Materials: Daily – A pencil, eraser, charged chromebook, headphones/earbuds (prefer with a built in microphone), good effort, and a positive attitude. Concerts – Girls need to wear black skirt/pants, a black shirt, and dark dress shoes. Boys should wear black or very dark dress slacks, a black shirt, and dark shoes. NO WRITING ON THE FRONT OF THE SHIRT.
Grading Scale: A = 93-100, A- 90-92, B+ = 88-89, B = 83-87, B- = 80-82, C+ = 78-79, C = 73-77, C- = 70-72, D+ = 68-69, D = 63-67, D- = 60-62, F = 59 or below
*Concert attendance is MANDATORY. A student’s grade will be lowered significantly if they do not attend.
**Extra credit is available at the discretion of the Director.
Required Assignments: Attendance at concerts, theory sheets, quizzes and Semester tests.
A Dozen Choir Room Rules
1. Enter and exit in an orderly manner.
2. No gum, candy, cough drops, or soda.
3. Be prepared for class with all materials. Warm-ups begin promptly after the bell.
4. Sit only when given permission. Standing allows for deeper breaths when singing.
5. Respect yourself, others and their property. If it isn’t yours, DON’T TOUCH IT.
6. Do NOT talk when you or others are supposed to be singing or listening.
7. Watch/listen to the Director/Instructor.
8. Sing/play/perform your part to the best of your ability.
9. Use appropriate language only.
10. Turn in all assignments on time.
11. No one leaves the choir room during class without a pre-signed pass or call from the office/classroom teacher.
12. Clean up after yourself and help clean up after others.
We are here to improve our musical abilities and knowledge and to work as a team. If you are unable to follow the rules, you will be disciplined and your grade will be affected.
