AP English Language and Composition 11

This is a full-year, one credit weighted course. The final exam is the A.P. test associated with the course.

This course has a required summer reading list: Antigone by Sophocles, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou, The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass by Frederick Douglass, The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, and The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Students are required to complete journals and other assigned activities in Google Classroom over the course of the summer. These assignments are due on the first Friday of the school year. Additionally, students will be given a timeline of major movements in literature (British and American) to memorize over the summer. Students will be quizzed throughout the summer and starting the first Friday of the school year. Throughout the year, students will participate in four units of study for each quarter. The first portion of the year is devoted to writing and rhetorical devices with a mixture of analysis of summer texts, visual analysis of images, practice exams, other essays, and a study of tone. The second portion of the year has an emphasis on Socratic circles, persuasive research, practice exams, essays, and continued analysis of the summer reading texts.

Students are also required to complete two independent reading projects per quarter using the approved reading list (see the reading list in the More Stuff tab).

Important Dates to Remember:

  • Unless otherwise specified, there will be vocabulary tests every Friday starting the second week of school.

  • Both independent reading projects are due 5 days before the end of each quarter.
