Mrs. Zellmann and Ms. Klaudina's Class

We got the chance to use the school's Mac lab to make repeating patterns. Each week we will expand our computer knowledge with relation to our units of inquiry.

Ms Palmer a former Crime Scene Investigator taught us about fingerprints. We learned that fingerprints have a spiral pattern.

Some students love to read their writing aloud to the class. Each time more feel comfortable and confident, great job!

Composing shapes from smaller shapes

Centers for expanding our pattern knowledge

Singing for all of primary for the holidays

Week 11

We love math and decomposing numbers all in our own way!

We explored wheel and axles and learned how an axle allows the wheel to spin freely.

We extended our simple machine knowledge through hands on play, adding to our treehouse, watching videos on tablets, and reading books on the computer. Everyone showed and shared their learning and had a lot of fun.

Week 10

Part of our routine the last few weeks has been reading to ourselves quietly each day. Students are given books at their level and practice for at least five minutes independently reading. We are showing progress each day as readers.

While we explored pulleys, everyone in our class made their own version of an elevator for our tree house. The class collaborated really well and worked hard discovering how to make the pulley systems work.

Our class made a book about the learner profile Caring and shared with the grade two. Awesome job!

Week 9

A great trip to the firehouse. Many connections were made to simple machines and their real life applications as the fire people use them.

New math centers and beginning subtraction.

We were challenged to be risk-takers and create a 3D screw from a flat piece of paper. No one was successful and we learned a lot about inquiring and risk-taking with this lesson.

This week we continued exploring the wedge as well as screw simple machines. The class took turns using a small crowbar (with teacher supervision) trying to separate two boards. One group of boards were attached by a nail and the other by a screw. We learned the spiral threads in the screw make it stronger. The class chose to use screws for the base of the tree house.

Week 8

The class decided the best way to learn is through exploring, researching on the internet, watching videos, and asking experts. With our first uses of the school's tablets the student's have been able to personalize their research and take some of their learning more directly into their hands. They did a great job.

For our simple machines unit our class is building a treehouse for a toy. We have learned about safety when constructing. Each student had multiple turns measuring and using a saw (wedge) to cut our wood for the base of the treehouse.

We have been really enjoying our time with reading buddies in grade four. For Halloween the buddies worked together writing a creative writing and made some spooky and silly stories.

Week 7

This week we have begun learning many strategies for addition. We also are learning how to combine more than one number. The class has been working with story problems as well as solving number sentences.

Our new unit began with the question "how do simple machines make work easier?" Here are some of the students questions following our discussion and formulating their own follow up questions. They then made a great list of ways to find an answer to their questions.

Here are more blend-able words and the sight words we have learned so far if you choose to practice at home.

Week 5

This week in math we compared numbers. The class was introduced to the greater than, less than, and equals to sign.

We learned about data collection in many different ways. Each student had the opportunity to survey a "favorite" of their classmates and record the data using tally marks.

The class worked so hard across two days and were incredibly proud of themselves. In groups everyone had a health related topic. Using books they decided what information they thought was interesting and

Week 4

Through a picture sort we discussed how to categorize healthy or unhealthy foods, emotions, and actions. The class did great sharing what their groups decided and working cooperatively.

We practiced with partners E+R=O. E for event, r reaction, and o outcome. Students are learning how they react to things can effect the outcome following. We are hoping to have positive outcomes to our days and our choices.

We learned the scientific method this week and got to be scientists. We are exploring what happens with eggshells in pop, water, and milk. Eggshells have the same minerals as our teeth on the outside. Next week we will make observations and form conclusions.

Here is a list of blend able words if you choose to practice at home.

Week 3

Moving our bodies

Drawing and labeling words that begin with the letter Rr.

This week we began a food and exercise log. Soon we will set goals in order to see how our actions can impact our health and what we can do to make changes.

We played a modified game of four corners to learn about what makes us different, tolerance, and our physical bodies.

Having fun our first two weeks in school.

Our First Day! Welcome to grade one.
