Today, the students were split into two groups: while one group went off sea kayaking, the second group had their very own 'MasterChef' challenge. After lunch, the groups switched activities.
For the group that went kayaking, a comprehensive briefing on their Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) was given before they took a boat to a Kelong (a large wooden platform). At the Kelong, the students were briefed on kayak handling and set off in pairs to a nearby small island surrounded by mangroves. The group had time to swim at the beach before heading back to the Kelong for a jetty jumping activity.
The second group was given instructions by a local chef on how to make two local desserts: onde-onde and dadar gulung. Afterward, in four groups of four, they had an hour to recreate the two desserts following a recipe and presented their dishes to the judges—the teachers! It was an activity that required teamwork, communication, and creativity.
After dinner, the students had a Game Night where they were given time to ask the teachers questions about themselves, and were later given randomized questions by the OrcaNation staff. The group with the most answers matching the teachers' answers won!
It was inspiring to see the students step out of their comfort zones today- whether navigating the mangroves on kayaks or testing their culinary skills in the kitchen. Their energy, enthusiasm, and support for one another continue to shine through. All students are safe, happy, and looking forward to another memorable day tomorrow!
Bintan greeted us with good weather and clear skies today. The students and staff arrived at Trikora Beach Resort in time for lunch, check-in, and a camp briefing by Ms. Reni, a staff member from OrcaNation.
The students got to play a "Kampong Game" of their choice:
Yeye (running through a turning rubber rope)
Tebak Gundu (guessing the number of marbles in their hands)
Jepit Kayu (transferring beans using chopsticks)
After that, they competed between groups in more local games:
Gobak Sodor (running through the opposing team's defense to reach the end without getting tagged)
Benthik (hitting a stick for the furthest distance)
The students enjoyed 1.5 hours of free time playing volleyball, football, and frisbee, and swimming in the pool. It was refreshing to see genuine interactions among them with their phones put away.
After dinner, we had the Orca Challenge, a station-based game where they worked as teams to complete mini-challenges.
Here are some pictures to summarise the day!
Regards,
Phoebe Tan
