Polygons are plane figures that are made up of sides, angles, and vertices.
We can describe and classify shapes by attribute.
We learned LOTS of new vocabulary including (but not limited to):
quadrilateral
rectangle
rhombus
trapezoid
parallelogram
pentagon
hexagon
Fractions: Learning Highlights:
10/12/17
Look at all of this fantastic thinking!!
Today we spent some time thinking about how the operations we use in math are related. All of these ideas came directly from our third grade students. They are numbers and operations wiz-kids.
October-Division
Our Learning Highlights (so far):
We can use our multiplication strategies to solve division problems!
Division is just rearranged multiplication.
When dividing, we know already know the total. In this way division is similar to subtraction.
September-Multiplication, Arrays, and Area
Our Learning Highlights:
x means "GROUPS OF"
When multiplying, we are dealing with equal groups
There are many ways to solve a multiplication problem. Some of our favorite strategies include skip counting, repeated addition, making arrays, drawing circles and dots, and using related problems.
We can use the multiplication equations we know quickly/easily to help us solve trickier problems. For example, if I am trying to solve 7x8, I can start by solving 5x8. Then I only have to add two more 8's.
Multiplication can be used to find the AREA of a rectangle.
