Over the summer I transformed an old office/ teacher workroom in the middle of the Media Center into a MakerSpace for students. This was extremely important to me because I wanted the MakerSpace to be a learning hub for students in the middle of the school. I also wanted it to be located in the Media Center so the Media Specialist and Digital Lead Teacher could be a MakerSpace co-teaching team.
Classroom teachers collaborate with the Digital Lead Teacher and Media Specialist to co-teach lessons in the MakerSpace that integrate the standards they are learning about in the classroom.
We created a recording studio in the MakerSpace that would allow students to create green screen videos, iMovies, podcasts and more!
Students Kindergarten- Fifth grade have the opportunity to come record their own individually, with a small group, or class!
Students have created restaurant reviews, mathcasts, podcasts, commercials, and skits.
This year Mrs. Grimes created Coding Clubs for interested 1st-5th grade students. They take place in the morning before school from 7:30-7:50. As soon as students arrive via bus or car they may bring their breakfast up and eat while they learn how to code! New applications go out each quarter insuring everyone who is interested has an opportunity!
In February, 4th grade girls came to Mrs. Grimes and asked if she would start a Girls' Only Coding Club because they didn't want to make mistakes with the boys in the regular Coding Club. So, Mrs. Grimes started a 4th grade Girls' Coding Lunch Bunch that took play every Friday during lunch. The girls ate lunch, programmed robots, played coding games, worked together to build a Raspberry Pi, and then programmed it together!
Our Robotics Club was so popular last year that it grew from 5 to 30 students! Mrs. Grimes taught 2 free Robotics Clubs for 4th and 5th grade students afterschool on Wednesday and Thursday (in addition to meeting during lunch). The Wednesday Robotics Club focused on building VEX Robotics, driving, programming, and competing against other schools. The Thursday Robotics Club focused on programming already created robots.
