Hello! I am Sybil Jefferson, and I am the co-teacher for ELA and Math for 8th grade. I help support all students with learning differences, but I work with all students.
I am an Asheville City Schools Legacy! Born and raised in Asheville, I attended Claxton, Hill Street Middle School, Asheville Junior High, and graduated from Asheville High in 1995! Go Cougars! My children are third generation Cougars, and we are proud of it!
I have worked for Asheville City Schools for 23 years. I began my employment as an instructional assistant while I was attending college. I worked at Asheville High for 17 years, and this is my 6th year at Asheville Middle School. I am a SyFy geek and love to watch and read anything historical and mysterious. It is my mission to help your student identify the best way that they learn and give them the tools to grow academically and pursue their future endeavors.

How to get to our class
The students that are assigned to my vocabulary group, after the first two weeks of school, will be learning Word Mapping skills. These skills will allow the student to take multisyllabic words that they are unfamiliar with, or they do not know the definition to help continue the understanding of their reading.
I will also be supporting students with learning differences in Jen Dohertys ELA class and Catherine Stewarts Math 8 class. I will be available during their class time and will observe the areas that your student is struggling in and then use the small group time on Wednesday to help them catch up, reteach the skill, front load a difficult skill or give the student more tools to learn the skill that they are having trouble with.
For live classes students will go to meet.google.com and enter the below code for their block. For example, if Susan is in my block 2, she would go to meet.google.com, click join a meeting, and enter AMSJefferson2.

My expectations are assigned to make sure that students build their skills to identify the way they learn and use the skills that I teach them to help them succeed in their classes.
Participate in class!
Turn in something above nothing!
Always be prepared for class. Always have a pencil and paper.
Always take notes to refer back to during homework.
If you don’t know how to do something, ask questions either in class or privately in an email.
If you are making lower then a “C,” your parent will be notified an extra tutoring time can be scheduled at parents’ request.
If you are scheduled to be in a small group, show up, take notes, and participate.
Check your CANVAS email.
Always communicate with your teachers by email or during office hours.
Students, please remember, Teachers don't give you grades, they give you opportunities to earn them.
