What a story you will be able to tell your children and grandchildren… “Yes, I was in school during the COVID-19 Pandemic and wait ‘til you hear what it was like for us.”

None of us could’ve imagined that Friday the 13th back in March of 2020 just how much school would have to change. It has in so many ways, but just as the mythical phoenix rose from the ashes, so have we.

Legend has it that Confucius said, “Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising every time we fall.” This is our team motto.

Inquiry: How does this quote or motto relate to the mythical phoenix?

We learn from our failures. That is called having a GROWTH MINDSET. Thinking this way, we “understand that intelligence can be developed and improved.” We can focus on improvement instead of worrying about how smart we are. Mistakes (failing) are celebrated as opportunities for learning! It’s all about putting forth your best effort, being persistent, and working hard.

Inquiry: How does our team name, Phoenix, relate to having a growth mindset?

AMS is an AVID school: ADVANCEMENT VIA INDIVIDUAL DETERMINATION. We are working to prepare all scholars for life, careers, and college. In that spirit, we have team names based on collegiate nicknames. Every team in our entire school has a nickname.

Inquiry: How many and what are the names of all colleges and universities have “Phoenix” as a team nickname?
